  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

Jannard said:
We have a pretty significant announcement mid-May. Stay tuned.

Jim

Posted in Scarletuser.com [Link] That doesn't sound like the tone of potential announcement, does it?

I agree though, time wasted worrying about what will happen will cause you to miss out on what is happening when you should be writing, shooting, saving money....

It means:

We may have a pretty significant mid announcement. Stay tuned.

People make such mistakes all the time... no reason to get all worked up because of it.

I am impressed with your interpretation of ambiguity in that statement, the only thing I found debatable is the "mid" in mid-May (the very confusion floating around this thread)

Its all a misunderstanding. They meant that there MAY be a mid Scarlet update... Not that there will be an update in mid-May.... stop bitching around, it's just a few misplaced words.

That's an amusing interpretation. It is quite clear that Jim meant middle of May though. (notice the caps on May) Sadly, he isn't with us right now, and that'll surely affect the announcement. Meanwhile, Jarred is getting the last pieces of information. Hopefully we will hear something by the end of May now. Or perhaps Red will wait till Jim is back in June for a biggie.

As a note to those thinking of buying a DSLR as a stop gap or to hit deadlines.... Don't forget that these are amazing still image cameras and the resale value wont drop much when Scarlet is released (unlike a video specific camera like the EX1, for instance).

In terms of resale... I would opt for 7D... as a 5DIII will likely be out late 2010.

And for $899 you can get a t2i with lens which has basically same 18 mp sensor and video capability as the 7D Main difference is compact body and only 1 digic4 chip so only 3+ fps stills instead of 8 like the 7d.

Most you can lose is 899 even if you back your car over it - I've lost more in dead red bricks than that! :-). Truth is it is a great, cheap 2nd cam to your scarlet 2/3 for shallow dof, BTS, still photos/continuity, light metering, etc. etc.

I thought I'd interject some highlights of another thread as a way to paraphrase it's madness. That tone seems appropriate at this juncture.

Tyler Durden:
You have a kind of sick desperation in your laugh.

When a thread starts reading like Bill Clinton grand jury transcripts, it's time for a reality check.
Bill Clinton:
It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.

LOL - or what Mid May 31/2 = 15.5 is, is? Jarred should just say next month sometime... when RED IS "R.E.D.D.Y" to release info... or throw us a scrap... some new hot specs, modules, release dates are just around the corner... or over the desert horizon by that Oasis.

Please, just be straight and honest... with the facts, we can handle the truth. The dates have passed, either set a new one or not. Obviously, some things have been delayed that can't be announced... which might be release dates rather than new features?! Just guessing like everyone?! I won't be waiting much longer, as I got a Florida Beaches HD to shoot May 1st for 2-3 weeks... Can't wait for Scarlett, the Oil might ruin the beaches first. ;-) When I get back, I'll read what I missed or what changed.

This is what Ive been able to put together ...true or not

Jim said Tattoo would be released this month ... some very involved early RED Users have been MIA as of lately

not much from off hollywood or steve gibby on here lately

Steve Gibby offered his very low numbered RED ONEs for sale almost 2 months ago ..

thats how he makes a living and i doubt he is using a canon 7d right now

Jim is MIA (for health reasons) but that could mean anything really

things are quite for now and any progress made with Epic will effect Scarlet

I m guessing that RED feels any resentment now will be forgotten when people have a EPIC/Scarlet

Greg, your post oozez frustration, and perhaps reasonably so,but i just instictively know that The team can`t `throw us a scrap`.. a juicy morsel of info to satisfy the hunger. We pretty much know the specs inside out..it`s gonna be fantastic, what can be added? Nor are they avoiding being straight and honest..i`m involved daily with a project that winds up with similar unavoidables, delays and unexpecteds and i wish it were`nt so.But it is.

For all who are frustrated..

Red acts in a market place that has hitherto been defined in developmental terms by cloying bureaucracy, market forces and narrow vision. We as consumers therefore have been acclimatized to business as usual in all we wish to aquire, with predictable release dates and slow progress etc.And yet with Red we a receiving a product that can only come into being by Jim and the Red Team leaping into the void..As eager first adopters,we, wether we like it or not,are jumping with them. And as thrilling and as exciting as that can be,it can be as equally frustrating.

Greg,I really hope your shoot goes well. :-)

Personally I couldnt care less if the mid may announcement is missed. When I can order the S35 Scarlet, thats when I will.

This is all good and important information, and I'm thinking SERIOUSLY of going the DSLR route while waiting for the Scarlet. The Canon 5D Mark II or the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV seem like good choices to me.

BUT, I wish you guys would be more specific when talking about cameras, DSLRs or otherwise.

"....I'd use the 5D III, t2i, or the 7d......." etc. That just isn't good enough when people don't know what the hell brand or type of camera you're talking about. No person can be expected to know the brands and model numbers of every camera ever made.

Would someone KINDLY explain to me what a 5D III, a t2i, and a 7d is, and be clearer on any other camera they may be talking about.

Thanks.

If you have to ask, you probably should just sit tight.

I don't understand the mentality here, the other students at film school seem to have this issue as well. Simply reading through a few posts on DVXUser.com or skimming through some of the video magazines at the bookstore (Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc.) will give you A TON of information on what's what. It's easy to know what tools are out there, maybe not the exact specs of each one, but you can at least take mental notes on certain things like, "Oh, AVCHD-based", "720p only", "1080p but no interchangeable lenses", "Bad in low light", etc. and you'll have the ability to tell your director what camera or cameras would be best suited for a particular shoot. Nobody is too busy to read a magazine or surf the boards a little even if it has to be bathroom reading.
