  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

Actually, is is VERY possible that they are in fact the same sensors and speed binned on how fast they can operate.

There is typically quite a bit of other support circuitry on the sensor die, and if they are really pushing the silicon speed, the EPIC S35 needs might be only a very small percentage of what they get out of fab. Typically extremely high speed chips target a single process corner to get the fastest operation there, and then the slower corners are used to produce a slower model.

It's not just the support circuitry in the rest of the system.

Chip design is done using statistical analysis of process variation. They typically take a 6-sigma approach around a typical result. This means there are probabilities involved in what you will get back on each wafer AND across each wafer. The distribution is a Gaussian distribution. The harder the requirements, the smaller section of that curve will produce a usable die. There is always a balance in chip design between wrangling in variance in your calculations or just taking a hit on product since if you factor in ALL variation possibilities, it would be impossible to design a chip that always worked in every die at high speeds.

So if their sensors were like 1 epic produced for every 10 scarlet, you can see that the epic, on cost value, is 10x since you have to produce 10x as many to get that number that work for your application.

i like how you put this. it makes alot of sense. its the same deal with cpus, i just built a new i7 rig and il tell you, i got one of the corner chips.

I design chips for a living, so I have that extra insight most people don't get to see. I have NOTHING to gain here by explaining this to anyone, so I do so in hopes that people can understand why integrated circuits vary in price so much. Not that companies don't just cripple a working product to get more sales, because they do, but that in the chip design world, there is a LOT of variance in a design.

As a matter of fact, the term for working to non-working parts off of a wafer is called 'yield'. This is something that product makers DO NOT share with other people. If you have 5% working parts off of a wafer, that means each of your parts is going to be pretty expensive. People guard this knowledge so that the competition doesn't know where their costs are.

Well I guess no Mid May update. I think I might have to move on and buy a 5D, I don't want to but I am going to start filming by the fall and I've already waited almost a year and a half for Scarlet.

Sad decision.

Happens to the best of us *sniff*

feels like quitting or breaking up doesn't it? Even if you STILL plan to buy scarlet, lol. Like dating someone else while the one you really love gets their life in order.

Man, that was pretty emo!

That's a good point. Pretty sure the inferior (lower clocking) chips will be binned for Scarlet. Besides, there are other components which might bottleneck the Scarlet anyway - it is much smaller.

On the other hand, there will be some chips out there (top bins is what they are called?) which I am sure can do more than the standard 120 fps at 2.37 on the Epic. Perhaps an overclocking feature?

more like dating the uglier bitchy sister

HAHA!

so true, and the good looking sister is supposed to be hot and nice, but you have only really seen pictures ;-P

Just announced

'Big Scarlet update coming mid-May.'

Well, here it is PAST mid May, and where's this big update.

Man, I sure wish they'd tell us SOMETHING, anything.

Shouldn't you have taken "mid-may" to mean "late may or early june"? I did.

Reverse Lombardi time.

(Vince Lombardi use to tell his players "If you're 5 minutes early, your late.)

As a note to those thinking of buying a DSLR as a stop gap or to hit deadlines.... Don't forget that these are amazing still image cameras and the resale value wont drop much when Scarlet is released (unlike a video specific camera like the EX1, for instance).

In terms of resale... I would opt for 7D... as a 5DIII will likely be out late 2010.

if its truly a place holder, T2i is the way to go, since the video is exactly the same at a significant price savings (can use for glass!)

MAYBE the glass will work on scarlet interchangable! But I would estimate interchangable twice as far away as fixed. So i am not investing in GREAT glass. Just waiting for fixed scarlet, money in hand, tear in eye.

Aslo let's keep in mind that an "announcement" is most times far way for product delivery.
So, if you are waiting this "mid-May" thing to shoot something...

It would be nice if someone from red could chime in and let us know if this announcement is still gonna happen. I'm tired of logging on here and sighing haha

agreed, I work for a media arts college, and I am trying to get RED implemented here, but the way it's going... yes, I know, patience, I've got it, and have had it, but any news would be nice.

You might start by reading this thread before you post. You don't have to look far or even read every post. Just look for the ones where the user's name appears in Red. It's pretty quick and easy.

A few pages back Jarred said they were getting some engineering info together for the announcement. That was a day or two ago. Edit: the 15th.

Here, I'll save you the trouble:
There never was a 15th date set.. Just mid-may. We are still waiting on a few pieces of information to come forth before we can lay it all out for you.

Thanks for your patience :)

Its all a misunderstanding. They meant that there MAY be a mid Scarlet update... Not that there will be an update in mid-May.... stop bitching around, it's just a few misplaced words.
