  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Mattebox availability?

I'm curious when the RED Mattebox will be released, since I'm in the market for one. The previously posted price is great, and its cheaper and lighter than the Redrock Micro box setup.

Remember what Price that was for the Red Mattebox and Redrock Micro box?

The prototype mattebox that was in the case was pretty large -- had some rather large flags on it too. The RedRock is actually really light, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. The stage rotation on the RedRock is almost non-functional out of the box and it only gets worse with use. The flags like to fall off all the time. The release for the swing-away likes to wear out over time.

The RED mattebox looked a lot like a carbon fiber LMB-5 to me and that's a good thing. I'm eager to see what they have for the final design and which lenses it will fit. If it doesn't fit their pro zooms with the 144mm front, then I will have to question the existence of this mattebox. Arri LMB-5 kit is around $1500 and is great if you don't need the swing-away option or rotating filters.

And if you do want the rotating filters there's the MMB-1 for about the same price.

will the new RED matte box work with the R-1 or only Epic/Scarlet?

All or any. A matte box doesn't care what camera you have. You just need to buy the mattebox which has the features you need and that will accommodate your lenses. Some are clamp-on, like the RED one currently is, some support on standardized rods and some cn be converted to do either.

FWIW, they had a prototype mounted on a RED One as well as the one sitting in the case at the Vegas event.

also waiting patiently for the RED matte box, I have the Redrock one and the build quality is not great...

At Reduser day in LA, the matte box I saw had custom clamp on rings for the RPP, yet you could also attach a piece to the matte box use it on rods.

Yes, even the RED mattebox is modular. BRILLIANT!

It seems to me that the swing away option is pretty clutch for a lot of us on here due to the large popularity of prime lenses and consequently many lens changes throughout the day.

I really hope they come up with some kind of swing away.

Here are some pictures and info of the mattebox that I posted hours after the LA Reduser day.

Red Matte box.

This is 2-3 versions old. It will have rotating filter trays. It mounts right onto the lens with these snazzy interchangeable lens mounts(most impressive). It will also have a swing away rail mount option.

Nab

Nab

I checked the box out at RED DAY at NAB, no rotation and no 138 filter threads. Not sure how useful it is other then for steady cam work.

Also no option for additional stages

Food for thought
