Hiya,

What resolution should RED footage be worked on?

I have gone through the whitepaper on finalcut but I am unsure as to what the best methodology is for working with RED footage.

Should I downsize everything before edit? or edit then downsize?

Thanks in advance,

For me, EDIT then downrez

Hi Jack,

I think it really depends on what kind of project you are working on and what kind of hardware you have at your disposal.

Redcode is native with premiere pro and fcp (well with the qt proxy) as well as after effects and apple color. You can edit directly without any transcoding, BUT it won't be as fluid as with some "low rez editing codecs" such as dv, dvcpro, prores and others.
In my experience you can edit the lowest proxy (from a 4K redcode) with a macbook pro, the middle with a quadcore and the high with an octocore. But personnaly if I have more than a couple of days of editing I would (note than I am not an editor) transcode everything before editing.
What kind of computer do you have?

It also highly depends on what is the project for, web add, tv, high end commercial, motion pictures, etc...
Also I find redcine/redalert to have more settings than premiere/ae and fcp/color, so I am sticking to debayer with the "red applications".

cheers,
antoine.

Hi Antoine,

The projects are quite varied, but no features.

We are working out of an 8Core 3Ghz Mac Pro running on FCP(Studio).

Red Cine looks to be powerful little package, but when transferring the clips to FCP for the edit should it be downsized? or should I get FCP to do this?

Thanks in advance,
