  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will this cable work for audio on scarlet? 3.5mm to XLR...

Just wanted to see if any cable like this would work to get audio in, or is there something proprietary going on with the cables you would buy from red?

I would think this would work right?

Also should I get TRS or TS? Is there a connection for the balanced TRS connection (stereo) or should I just get one with a mono connection (Tip Sleve) ?

No it won't work. You want the XVS-102F (or 101F or 10xF). The M in XVM stands for Mono and the S is for stereo. You want the XVS/Stereo cable because all three XLR pins are wired separately (whereas mono cables generally have pins 2 and 3 connected.)

OH crap... Not sure if there is a Male XLR ended cable (at least not by hosa, which are the least expensive ones out there.)

I think RED DSMC cameras handle it differently. Because they have the ability to send phantom power over a 3.5mm jack, they need the third/stereo pin of the XLR to be wired separately from the second pin... So regardless of whether you're using phantom power or not, it would ground the mic out if you didn't have a stereo-3.5mm-to-stereo-XLR adapter... I'm just freeballin' here; that could be completely wrong technically, but that's the way I understood it. In any case, you need to have XLR pin2 and pin3 wired individually (pin1 is ground and is always the same.)

It should be simple enough to get the XVS-102F and then find a small Female-to-Male adapter.

Ah thanks so much, though I can't seem to find the right connection end for that, I want a male xlr end, but can't find it. Why would the "M" not work, its a mono connection anyway, so why does it need all 3 wired?

Would this be a better alternative? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=157944&is=REG&Q=&A=details

You probably want a female XLR end, right?

Check this out, just found one;

One of the reviews actually says it works on the Scarlet. I'm actually gonna buy two of them too.

But yeah, you're probably gonna want a Female XLR, I haven't seen a mic that isn't Male XLR output.
