  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dominik,

It's mostly trial and error. Once you find a scaling algorithm you like for one specific type of scene like moving leaves, you'll find that using that same algorithm for mostly "still" actors doesn't work the way you thought it would.

I once tried downscaling a 6k source, which was in a 1.94:1 aspect ratio from a dragon sample image, down to a DCI 4k (4096x2160) 1.91:1 aspect ratio and a 4k and 3k 1.94:1 aspect ratio, each with all of the different Scaling algorithms. Sometimes I thought I saw a difference and sometimes I didn't . I think a higher resolution monitor than what I used to view the difference between the images would have revealed a greater difference. It's just about trying them all out until you find what you like for different types of scenes and different downscaling resolutions.

Dominik,

I mostly use "Clarity" and " Unsharp Mask" to sharpen anyway. Most people are perfectly fine with the sharpness they get from a simple downscale, Some are not. I just prefer to do a little extra, right or wrong.

I mostly like starting at about "0.149" for "clarity" under the "Image: Effect: Alchemy Group" for and Output Transform Of "High Contrast" Tone Map and "Very Soft" highlight rolloff. And under "Image: Effect: Unsharp Mask", I start at "60" Amount with the default "1.000" radius. These are just starting points that you can adjust a little more or a little less.

I mostly like starting at about "0.194" for "clarity" under the "Image: Effect: Alchemy Group" for and Output Transform Of "Medium" Tone Map and "Medium" highlight rolloff. And under "Image: Effect: Unsharp Mask", keep the same "60" Amount with the default "1.000" radius as above. Again, these are just starting points that you can adjust a little more or a little less or you might not what to use them at all and just decide on a scaling algorithm that gives you the sharpness you are looking for.

thanks heaps for that, I just tried a few different options and the results are very subtle if recognizable at all. in the past i just left it on the default algorithm and used the smart sharpen option in photoshop as the last step before saving my stills. i achieved quite nice results through that.

Dominik,

BTW,

Do you have the new Redcine-X Pro version 50.1.0 that also came out 10 days ago? This could help as well.

Here is the Operations Guide For Redcine-X Pro for version 50.1.0 revision-C. I constantly read and re-read it on a regular basis.
