  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why Instagram Videos Will Be Better...

Considering I ordered my first RED ONE at NAB in 2007 and was among the very first to own the EPIC-M and have consequently been an active member of this forum for 5 years, I am certainly aware of the talents that frequent this forum. My daughter happens to be a prodigy and in mentioning her, the context was still photos, not cinematography.

I just don't understand why everyone is so angry on here lately...(you should read the thread I started about the new Mac Pro. Talk about anger!)

Back in 2011, before I released Vizzywig, I invited 50 top RED User members to participate in a closed Beta. They were brutal, merciless and harsh. It was the best thing I ever did. That sort of intense criticism pushed me to make the app better and when I released it in January 2012, it won Best of Show at Macworld. It is currently the highest rated video editing app on the App Store (4.5 stars on over 2,400 reviews) and is the ONLY app in the world (all app stores) that charts high at a $19.99 price point.

So, do I believe that peer feedback on a social forum can improve quality? You bet!

Instagram will do the same for millions of young, budding photographers who will now be pushed to add motion in a meaningful way their friends will appreciate.

Michael

Nothing to do with being angry at all. It's just that your definition of excellent thus far, on the basis of the few pics you've posted from instagram to support your ideas, have been amateurish at best and appalling at worst. Nothing angry about that, just observation.

And now your last post makes it very very plain that you weren't inviting conversation but are just pushing some app and which is why you keep making outrageous claims about quality in a cinematography sub-forum. Wrong crowd for that tbh. Again not angry, just confused as to why you thought those claims would gain traction among people whose job it is to take pictures for a living (motion or otherwise) when you could very easily put the subject to rest by posting sheer instagram excellence.

EDIT: I'm going to duck out of this thread now because it's not really the discussion on the subject I thought it would be and I find myself sounding more and more like a grumpy old man :)

Instagram video just came out a few days ago...give it a year then ask me to show you examples again. I said that this is the beginning of something important, not the end or even the middle. And I never said those were excellent examples, re-read my post, I said those were the best 3 of 10 I watched at random that day. When I believe something is truly excellent, I will say it is.

Not pushing my app at all Ben. I think my contributions to this forum speak for themselves. I have probably mentioned my app 10 times in 2,342 posts over 5 years and it's not even in my signature. Just pointing out how critical social feedback can encourage excellence over time. My app is a relevant example of that... it wasn't a commercial. Also qualifying that I know enough about both professional digital cinematography and consumer mobile video to understand how one will impact the other. I don't frequent RedUser to promote my "consumer" app. That would be a terribly inefficient use of my marketing time. I frequent RedUser to learn and grow professionally, engage in meaningful debate about the art of cinematography and submit my views to criticism in hopes that my work (and my app) will be the better for it. I also don't attack others.

I take pictures (motion and otherwise) for a living too Ben and have for 20 years. I own 2 RED ONE's, An EPIC-M, An Epic-X, an Epic Monochrome and a Nikon D800E (also not listed in my signature). I sent back a Zeiss Master Zoom last month because I couldn't live with it not covering 5K at the wide end. I'm not some random Instagram user or App Developer who accidentally ended up on the wrong forum. If my theory is that Instagram adding video will "eventually" over time improve the quality of mobile cinematography, why would you expect me to show examples after three days? Didn't it take all of us years?

Some people for one reason or another manage to live on the pulse of life and embrace it. Some people need the masses or advertising to influence them before they make a decision. Michael you seem to be one of the lucky ones who lives on the pulse of life. I think you are onto something here. When YouTube first emerged it was scoffed at as a promotional tool. Instagram will be a very important promotional tool for film makers.

Just one example of many...

LINK

Remember that these are everyday consumers, not professional photographers. Just wait until these users start creating 15-second videos of same caliber.

This is a banal tourist photo with less than stellar camera position and an auto-filter on it. Kudos only to the programmer of the filter.

Huh? Did you even click the link?

There are 15 separate images and none are tourist photos...

Here is the LINK again but it's the same as in your quote?

The core issue is that it's iphone footage only. When instagram allows desktop uploads and you can make a 15 second spot shot on red and put it on instagram maybe, but until then video wont take off. Companies use pics taken on phase ones uploaded to instagram, you cant do that effectively with the video end, No one wants to see an iphone promo video.

I think it's an interesting concept, but it requires tighter integration. I'm much more interested in facebooks new video ad ideas.

Here you go... And I just accidentally deleted my Instagram account after posting a pic of Venice... Good thing I only had 100 followers... But now will not let me open a new account with my own name, so if they don't take care of it, I don't think I'll re-opened... But I am with you Michael, 1000%+ especially now that Instagram has the baking of Facebook mega dollars and the world's largest social media community... ;)

Posted June 2013… Just wanted to resurface this heated debate thread in the interest of looking back on time.
Any thoughts?

Yeahp. Instagram has been the primary delivery format for what I do for quite a long while. Funny to be looking back at when video was introduced. And how reels are just the latest iteration. It’s not a question for me on if the media will go on Instagram or elsewhere, but rather will it be a Post, IGTV, Story, or a Reel?

True…Now it’s a lot of deciding what type of post it will be. The smartest creators are using intelligent planning and DSMC’s to capture for still, vertical, portrait, long-form and short-form all at the same time and then extracting stills and cropping for various formats.

But I still believe the best content will always be on Instagram. Watch TikTok for 5 minutes then watch Reels for 5 minutes.

Instagram is no longer for photographers, so yeah, go nuts with your videos.

I hope that IG goes the way of MySpace. It's too clunky, confused, unfocused and riddled with ads. No thank you. There is a better way...

How do you mean, “Instagram is no longer for photographers” Karim. Do you have any quantitative data or qualitative research you can share with us to support that statement?

What one thing do you believe Instagram could do this year to avoid going the way of My Space and become the better way you envision?

I don't give free advice to companies I don't like. In fact I'm working on designing a photo sharing platform with a friend and business partner. It might not happen but we will see.

Well, it's up to the end-user a far as how to use IG.
Whiles its still in vogue, I will use it till something else better comes along.
