Hey all, I'm hoping to receive my email to send in my Epic M soon, but until then, I figure I might try and figure out which expansion chassis out there is the best for the RR-X.
I was looking at the Sonnet Echo Express III-D and wondered if anyone out there with a RR-X had their card in one of these.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Bridges should be strong

Bridges should be strong

This is a hot space right now. Sonnet, Magma and several others want to be your RR-X TB2 external chassis vendor.

The tough part is figuring out the best choice when (AFAIK) all of them are still doing a lot of engineering/revisions due to the limited availability of TB2 chipsets and lack of established TB2 ecosystem. If you can wait until NAB there should be several credible options at different price points with decent drivers/firmware/code.

IMO, getting a legit TB2 chipset/architecture vs a kludge is worth some extra coin and some patience. I would also pay more for solid build quality/cooling/PSU capacity. I anticipate a long service life for TB2 peripherals and in our work an expansion chassis might move around quite a bit. YMMV.

If any vendor has a ready to ship, fully stable TB2 compliant expansion chassis please post the specs here, sans the marketing drivel, and I'll wager Jay and I won't be the only RedUsers interested.

Last I heard RED was still working out some issues with drivers for RR-X over TB2, but Rob and the RedTeam are putting resources into fixing it so with luck it wont be long. I'll kindly ask Rob to clue us in or correct me if that's changed.

I called Maxx Digital, they dont have any to test or anything.

I would love to test asap
thanks

Hi Lu,

I have the MAXX Digital one, RRX installed here in the OC. Tb1Picked it up at Ron's 2 days ago.

I was there and talking with Devon as well about doing some testing with the CFDragon-perhaps this week. Lemme know, if you are available and interested.

Thank you very much

Lu,

ive got the sonnet iii-D, but no Rrx card yet. If you have a RRX let's stick it in there and cook something.

Lu when I posted the quoted reply below to your thread I was hoping Ron had an extra one to test, sorry to hear they didn't have one. But to me this babe will be worth the wait... ;)

BigLu we spoke on Friday at Maxx Digital. We should have some unsold Mobile Rocket TB1 units in stock tomorrow. If you want to come see for your self and test, let me know...we have a RRX.

Casey

I have spoken to on multiple occasions with Ron at Maxx Digital and they care to be updated with the latest and greatest on this subject
they put the time and effort in knowing whats out there and how to best guide you.

Call them you'll be happy I can tell you from what i saw its an evolving set up and the 2 premiere companies at this time seem to be magma and sonnet and what is cool about Ron is he knows all the guys whom are using them and he can give you the experiences they are having.

Best of fun luck
BTW see ya this week i need to get into your studio I have a pilot i wanna shoot at your bad ass facility.

The RED Rocket-X requires a true 16x PCI-E lane. Not going to work with 4x/8x TB1 enclosures.

We have been exploring this as well. We have learned that our existing CUBIX Rackmount 6 that is about 3 years old now and running our Rocket, can't support Rocket X because it only has 8 lane electrical throughput even though it has 6 PCIe x16 slots!

Have to do an upgrade, which will be PCIe version 3, 16 lane for both newer GPUs (we have Quadro 4000's currently) like the 780's, Titans or the AMD 9100's.

The data throughput on these cards is way higher than TB 2. I don't know what the throughput is on the RRX, but I would be concerned about it being bandwidth limited in ANY TB enclosure.

Black Magic is advising that the RRX go inside our 5.1 MacPro. But we're still investigating whether that's necessary.
