  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello,

I'm installing a little shop with a colorgrading suite and we want to have a projection on a 3.2mx1.69m screen. Ideally 4k.
I'm looking for the following projectors.

I’m currently setting up an NZ8 (RS3100). SDR looks rather nice - haven’t had the chance to calibrate HDR yet.

If JVC let me tinker with AutoCal I might even port it over to a Mac…

How is the noise of the fans?
What screen are you using? I was thinking of Harkness MattPlus. (we do also sound mixing)

The projector being setup here is in a large home theatre (180” diagonal screen = 400cm wide : Da-Lite High Power : Gain 2.8 (might be 2.7)).

SDR in Mid laser is more than enough (due to the gain of the screen).

You can hear the sound of the fan in Mid - and more so in High. For cinema use, the you don’t notice the fan (in this room has a very high ceiling).

When I get back to the Uk - I will be setting up another NZ8 in a smallish room (with the same sort of screen size you are using : gain 1.0) and will definitely end up designing a hush box (HDR + colour filter + HDR will undoubtedly required High laser lamp setting).

The Barco SP2K is pretty well-proven in the post business, and I know some LA companies who are using it in small/mid-sized (20 seats) installations. Nobody (that is, no post supervisors or studios) will blink if you tell them you're using one for final color in DCI color space.

The trick with projection rooms is the "everything else" required to get it to work: power, sound proofing, lenses, screen, speakers, seating, lighting, and so on. It's not unusual to spend $30K on the projector and then $100K on the room it sits in. It's hard to do it fast or cheap, and then there's calibration to consider. The throw distance between the projector and the screen is tricky, because generally you have to bring the brightness way down for normal theatrical levels (48 nits).

11 feet by 6 feet is pretty small for a theatrical screen these days. I think the smallest room I've worked in in LA is about 15' x 12' or so.
 
On the professional side - Marc's input is invaluable.

With regards to the the JVC question :
+) For SDR we found 'High' laser too bright - and settled for 'Mid'
+) For HDR we used 'Bright' in JVC's 'Frame Adapt HDR mode to slide the picture luma levels up and down (so that dark content is not too dark).

With the RS3100 and RS4100 there is a colour filter that can be electrically engaged to improve the P3 colour accuracy (it separates the overlap of two the laser outputs) - but at the expense of some light output.

I used JVC own AutoCal software. It works with either Consumer or Professional colour meters. Autocal can correct either : [Colour + Gamma], [Colour] or [Gamma]. The consumer meter (SpyderX) corrects gamma perfectly. Using it for [Colour] might be about the same level of calibration as what ships with the projector.

RS3100 (NZ8) image quality 2K & 4K SDR : Amazing (especially contrast)
RS3100 (NZ8) image quality 4K HDR : Great for a calibrated projector with a peak luminance of around 1850 ANSI lumens. I guess JVC will need 5000+ calibrated lumens peak (and when <1.5% of the screen is at maximum brightness) to dispense with the 'Frame Adapt HDR' mode; Not something I expect to see for a few years.

Hello Antony,

On the laser side do you see any problem with chormatic abberation on high contrast vertical objects?
I could buy a RS-3000 (not laser) for the half price of a RS4100, should I take it instead of a RS-4100? I'm a bit cautious about laser projectors as it's a "new" tech.

I've returned to the UK and will get the 2nd JVC projector at some point in February.

Kris Deering (and others) provides insight a artifacting (and when it caused by settings / lack of calibration / or sources that scale / process / zoom / inpolate / convert).
If you have an image that you want the community to test (and even compare to another projector) you will likely find others that step in (possibly Arrow for higher end).

So how are the news? I'm about to invest in the 3100... the 3000 isn't available anymore (the seller wants to keep it as Barco has delivery problems...).
Do you like the 3100?

+) First NZ8 (3100) was setup in a home install 5m screen) in Cyprus Jan 2022 - not that much time to play with it other than calibrating it for a partially lit room.
JVC have released a firmware update that fixed some of the Autocal issues that I (and likely others) raised.

+) Second projector for the UK : Has not yet been delivered (JVC are moving their factory from Thailand to Japan) : I should be receiving it in July/Aug (fingers crossed).

Sony 'responded' to JVC - and released XW6000 (and a few other laser projectors) : As Sony are using one additional laser output (rather than yellow phosphor material that the JVC uses) - the P3 colour output is wider.

Kris D is doing a comparison of the Sony vs the JVC in a couple of months (Aug/Sep).

My (complete) guess is that the Sony will be brighter / have a better lens / be significantly smaller than the JVC / quieter and high brightness levels,

I would definitely now consider the Sony on a shortlist - especially if the Sony is cheaper / and does not have the lead time of the JVC.
