Hi folks,

My first post on RU..:blushing:

I'd love to hear from any experienced users who have used the Scarlet X in adverse weather condition.

I'm a photojournalist / commercial photog, and I've transitioned to moving images and shoot on location most of the time.

I've tried finding info on what is the weather seal of the Scarlet X and whether or not it can be used in high humidity, rain, dusty environs etc..

Any info would be kindly appreciated

Many thanks

Ethan

Hi Ethan,

I have worked in very rainy situation with a shower cap as my only "Weather sealing". the camera lives well. The whole cooling and venting system is sealed of the innards of the camera, though i don't think that the buttons and SSD slots are weather sealed at all.
So be very careful where you use your camera.

i know this is probably sacrilegious to this group, but i have shot in almost every terrible condition imaginable. (it's just my luck). this was a shoot for Arrested Development, and it POURED on us. all i had was 1 small umbrella. and i shot for 6 hours in the rain, and the only issue i had was wet feet.

Thanks guys for your response.

Any advice out there when shooting in dusty/humid environments.

Would be particularly keen to hear from people who used the Scarlet in jungle/rain forest environment without much support.

I have an assignment coming up in the jungles of South East Asia. Any advice on on how to deal with dirt/humidity/high temp/moisture and so on.

The DI process has been smoothed out (solar charges / external red rocket card and so on) so thats not a worry, more the Scarlet capabilities with weather elements.

Many thanks

Ethan

I shot in the Brazilian jungle and we had no major troubles. Definitely more bugs on us than the camera ;-)

Just protect it from direct rain, I'm not sure all are as lucky (well, kind of…) as Tony. You'll need to turn the fan higher if it's very hot, and you'll need to be extra careful when changing lenses. If it's really dusty (which is rare in wet areas), a good old black rubberized bag might be helpful – the kind we used to change film rolls back then.

This is a good question, what about dusty environments it seems the Scarlet would suck that Dust right in through that speedy fan.

Hi T.A. Franks,

According to RED the fan and cooling duct is a sealed unit so the fan should not be a source of problems in this area. The imaging area is of course another matter with respect to dusty environments.
