  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Variable Frame Rates?

Thought I’d log back in to see if anyone else is perplexed that the action crash cam Komodo doesn’t have variable/interval frame rates. Glad there’s a thread. Hopefully they implement it as this camera is perfect for action and fight scenes. Especially multi Komodo cam fight scenes.

I’m fine to shoot 24/25 but I do like a lower option or slightly higher option.

Anyone know if there a Komodo suggestion box?

Well, Red seems to have abandoned this forum and there's no line of communication about features as there's been in earlier days. So no one knows what the future of Komodo is at this time. We also haven't gotten any new firmware, not even betas after we had around half a year of constant updates with new improvements.

As we don't know what is going on, I'm hoping that the silence is because they're occupied with trying to deliver the backorder for Komodo. Once that is out, they might focus on continuing the improvements. But it doesn't make sense either since manufacture and software R&D probably aren't the same teams. Maybe they're all working on DSMC3 instead, keeping the lid tight until revealing it. But I must say that Red has never been this silent and especially when people have critical questions that Red support really can't answer.

It really feels like Komodo just stopped right in the post-release phase. Like they just pulled the plug on it at some "good enough" point in time (last firmware). But for a company that markets itself as being the one who caters to the ones who aren't happy with just "good enough", it really starts to become an irony that Komodo just feels like it ended at "good enough".

We have so many things that need fixing. We need the variable framerates, we need AF to go out of beta, we need to have a better monitor workflow not relying on SDI ports prone to burn out, we need improvements to wireless video consistency and reliability etc.

I seriously hope that there are reasons for the silence and that Komodo is actually on the schedule for improvements, because things feel half-baked at the moment. Red should finish what they started and live up to the "better than good enough" slogan they keep marketing.

I imagine they’re working hard to rectify the sdi issue. Small companies such as red can’t just throw huge teams at a problem to solve them quickly, unlike Canon or Fujifilm for example.

Regarding variable frame rates, I’d be happy with a 48 frame base timeline. We film 48fps, 360 shutter on our Gemini normally, and edit in a 24fps timeline using optical flow. This allows us go half speed slow motion if needed while retaining audio on the track. This also gives us better stabilization in post if needed.

In any case... red.. if you’re listening... 48fps timebase on Komodo please!!!

3K modes with a max frame rate between 75-100, lower frame rates below 24, and time lapse features will be welcomed.
I would find it hard to believe that RED abandoned development. Hopefully an update will be available soon likely around Fall NAB time.

Timelapse is nice, but not the same as variable framerates. We need the customization of framerates, being able to set framerates up to the set limit, just like we can do on DSMC2. So it should be at least 1-40 fps customizable in 6K.

Hopefully, we get some updates to the AF system as well. I would really like to see some kind of face-tracking. I mean, if it ain't possible inside the Komodo itself, let Michael put that feature into the Red Control app. If an iPhone can track faces in toy-apps like Snapchat, why wouldn't it be able to in Red Control? It just analyses the images and locks the focus box onto the face or eye. Sure, the latency could be a problem, but if we can't get face tracking inside the camera, this is the next best thing and it is not really a huge difficulty for app developers to incorporate.

Depending on the limits, time lapse could in theory set any frame rate. But yes, a more clear answer on the specific rates between 1 and 40 would be nice.
