I'm wondering...if the Scarlet is exactly the same thing at the Epic....minus some frame rates and a few other software things....do you think its physically possible.....or probable that Red will allow Scarlet users to upgrade their cameras to the epic? Instead of having to sell the scarlet and then buy the epic? Do you think this is this even possible?

In theory yes since its the same size and sensor, different boards...

But red never announced this as a possible upgrade path...

They did however say Scarlets can be upgraded to Dragon, so there is an upgrade path right there that was announced officially. No other details are known at this juncture though, stay tuned for when Dragon announcements appear

it's an interesting idea, specially because even if it ends up being the same price, it's like a having made a down payment, and then when finances permit to pay the rest, have access to the premium camera.

I'd definitely save for such an upgrade.

Sure, thanks. I know this is a very premature question. Most are still gritting teeth waiting to get their Scartet. I just wasn't sure if this would be in the realm of possibility with Red's stance on "Rendering Obsolete Obsolete".

Enrique that's what I was thinking too. I could purchase the Scarlet now to meet the needs of my small independent production company. Then in the future if it grew enough to need the epic I could just upgrade instead of having to buy a whole new camera.

That would be very confusing in the marketplace: a camera that looks like a Scarlet but performs like an Epic. Doesn't sound like a sound idea to me.

As Scarlet is made from components that did not pass QC for Epic it's not going to happen. The components were not fast enough for Epic data rates.

There already is an upgrade path. It's called "Sell your Scarlet brain, buy an Epic brain, and use all the same accessories you already own."

Honestly, for Red to allow updating the internals only is silly. The whole point of the brains being different colors on the outside is that you can instantly tell what you're using.
