Hello guys,

It's finally time to order that RED.
I know there are threads in other parts of the forums about the best minimal system config, however I'm posting this here because Im seeking the advice of my British bretheren.

Here's whats on my minimum spec sheet. It doesn't include sticks, matte box etc. (basically anything that RED don't manufacture.

RED ONE BODY

BASE PRODUCTION PACK

RED 18-50mm T3 Zoom

RED LCD

RED POWER PACK

RED BRICK 140Wh X2

RED DRIVE (RAID)

RED FLASH (CF) Module

COMPACT FLASH 8GB X9

RED HANDLE (Left)

SIDE HANDLE X2

BODY CAP

LENS REAR CAP

BOLT SET X2

Have I left anything out?

The camera is going to go out on all kinds of music video, advert and film shoots however it's bread and butter will be a studio or interview settings.

I would say probably a few extra batteries and another charger, a top mount if you want bars on top as well, and a universal mount with quickplate adaptor useful for a lighter set up. Also the 19mm arri bridgeplate is good if you need to mount camera on any dollies or rigs.

Isn't the "top mount" included in the Base production pack?

I believe you may need 2 top mounts in order to secure long rods with heavy attachements in place.

A bigger selection of lenses is necessary, however the bread and butter is going to be sit down interviews and ENG affairs. When it's used for a promo or film, lenses can be rented.

If its for ENG only, then you may only need one top mount for the top handle which is included in the p-pack.

Only thing that I would point out is with one Red Raid, what do you do if/when you reach the 320gb capacity? You wont have a spare to use while dumping the first hdd.

If its a really fluid ENG setup with long talky bits, you probably wont want to worry about dumping footage from that hdd on set if you can get away with it? (albeit not worrying about storing lots of footage on one drive which shouldnt be a concern for talking heads stuff)

You could go to cf cards while your single redraid is copying footage but that would be a 4 minute-take nuisance, in which case you might need/want a couple of nexto ultra's to avoid dumping footage elsewhere until the end of the day

Not sure if that made perfect sense/excellent grammar but you get the gist

Thanks for the advice Johnny, it made perfect sense.

Most shoots do not result in more than 30 minutes/1 hour of footage. There have been extreme cases where 2-3 hours were necessary, but they are becoming less frequent.

Im aware of the benefits of shooting in 4K, however alot of this material is headed straight for the internet so 2K is more than acceptable in my books.

Which raises another question; I know that shooting in 2K only uses the centre portion of the Mysterium and thus changes the characteristics of any 35mm PL mount lens that you may use. I was wondering if this affects focal length in anyway. Probably a stupid question, but if photons arent hitting the sensor from the edges of the lens, will that result in a diminished field of view?

It won't affect focal length but it will affect the FOV. So a 20mm lens used for 2K will give the same FOV as a 40mm lens used for 4K. Bottom line is if you want to be able to go at all wide when shooting 2K you will need an S16 lens. 18mm is not that wide for 2K.
