  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UK Customs charges?

Most of us will get the VAT back so 10% aint bad. Other than that, take a little trip to go and pick it up...... ;)

After a discussion with a learned friend of mine, my previous suggestion
is rather stupid. If you dont pay the import duty, it never entered the country and then you could never have it on a carnet for that location shoot in the Bahamas.

Hmm that would most probably be more valid for equipment that actually is registered, for example cars. Otherwise your insurance (how ever you set it up) would take care of that. I have Mamiya stills cameras that wasn't bought in the UK and no import tax was paid for them either (not that it actully was needed, but that's not the point). They're insured and there has never been any problem or questions with that. Only thing you have is that you give the insurance company the serial number for 2 reasons. One is to make sure it's not already stolen (most probably that's never checked) and the second reason (more probable) is for tracking if it get's stolen.

Is that 10% duty correct or just a guess? I've heard many numbers and the one that has fit with what is available on TARIC listings is 6%... I know which I'd prefer.

Hey fred.
Would not advise trying to dodge customs duty. If you have any foreign shoots you need to get a carnet and if there was ever any problems with the carnet (as I had, on one recent trip) you may have to provide all receipts for your kit, and if you haven't declared your camera but have put it on a carnet, you will be in deep doo doo.

Also, if you declare it against business/sole trader tax, watch out, the vat man and tax man are connected and would notice a difference in your expenses.....

those are, i think, the figures i was quoted - i walked in through the red channel recently and spoke to a customs officer there who looked up answers in his book. there was certainly no figure anywhere near 10% mentioned.

any chance you could talk us throught the whole process you went through to get you camera in your hands, from payment (or when Red called to tell you your number was up) through to receiving the camera yourself? It would be great to hear what was easy and what was difficult.

I'm not sure CF cards aren't cheaper in the UK. A quick search showed you can pick up Sandisk 8GB Extreme IV for £80 + VAT.

Of course the other accessories such as basic production unit I'd be interested to know about. Do they simply come as part of the camera Rory?

Ach, VAT is fair enough but in a global economy import duty is a F£$£ing rip-off :ranting2:
