  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Two camera shoots

You will never get the latitude out of the HVX as you will out of the REDCODE Raw.
The HVX has a set look you can only push those pixels so far in any direction before it beings to tare apart.
Then you have the DOP issue your footage will not look even close unless your using a film lens adapter and even then you are only a step closer but still far away.

HVX shoots 720p not even 1080 although it says you can do 1080i or p that is an up res conversion inside the camera. Best off staying in 720pn mode when you record.
So understand your dealing with 720p footage and you want it to MATCH not look kind of but MATCH 4K and or 2K footage?
Nice try but NO.
Understand I love my HVX it's been my stepping stone to my RED Camera but, the HVX is a fixed lens the RED uses Prime lenses, HVX is under 1k and the HVX has a set look already no matter what you do so you have to grade RED to look like the HVX style. Hard to go the other way.

Film matching RED, Viper Stream matching RED, D-20 matching RED, Genesis mathcing RED, With Beau Leon as my colorist. Maybe I could kinda see.
But a 1/3 chip HVX-200 under 1K camera matching RED.
Sounds like a challenge im willing to try.

Now with all that said...
I will be breaking the rules also, and I will be dual shooting 1 day my HVX with my RED. I will see how close I can get the two.
Just because you have really got me going.

Im curious to know what your results are.
Please keep me posted.

I dont get that... Why do companies use the SD card for data settings, but capture onto the CF card? why not just use capture and settings on the same card? (or same format). Is it to differentiate?

I'm quite sure that you will also be able to use CF cards for settings. But I actually like to separate the purposes of the cards: CF as digital magazine for the clips and SD for settings, firmware and the like.

Most Live events are shot with multiple cameras that also include different "manufactures" and models. If anyone watched the Super Bowl or Grammy's
you watched a multitude of cameras controlled in a "video engineering area"
of a production truck.

The point is... with multiple camera shoots you need a good engineer/DIT to make the cameras match best onsite and ensure the cameras setting are correct including a sync box to match time code.

That is different to what we're discussing here. Most of those cameras are of different brands but of similar format. The question here is if it can be matched - the answer is yes but you have to match RED to the HVX. Now were's the fun in that?

Seeing as how my footage will just go straight to DVD / Internet anyway, I'll have no problem matching the RED to the HVX... I didn't think I'd be able to go HVX -> Red. And if I could, what would I need a RED for in the first place?

So for the RED, I read through the documents, but I didn't really see it anywhere, but can I set the camera to record at 720p? instead of 4k or 2k, as I'll most likely never need footage at that resolution? or would it look BETTER to shoot at 2k or 4k and then convert it down in post?

I'm scared about doing that hearing some of the guys on the board talk about it taking 100 hours to convert down 2 hours of footage. Whats up with that?

So why do you want to shoot with the RED when you're gonna downgrade its footage to HVX quality? Is it the depth of field? But I don't think a shallow depth of field would be beneficial in your business.

I don't think RED is the camera for this poster based on this discussion unless he's got a lot of help. I think he'd be better off with 2 HVX's. Certainly he should rent a RED for a day and intercut it with stuff he's already shot on an HVX to get a feel for how it will go.

But I can see high quality sex scenes (classy porn?) being shot with RED - but that's a whole different discussion.

red is equivalent to 35mm. hvx200 is not. if the hvx was closer to 35mm in quality, you wouldn't be buying a red. there's nothing on set you can do to make a red and hvx200 to match in post. if you want to use hvx200 on your set with the red, use it to shoot the behind the scenes documentary. :)

And that IS a whole other discussion. However, I am thinking about shooting a sex scene with RED and seeing how it comes out... if good, then hey, I might do my entire movie on RED.

You could shoot RED at 2K with a wider lens. That will give you deeper DOF so focus shouldn't be as critical. That's pretty much what's happening when you shoot your HVX. Autofocus on the HVX is slow so I'm pretty surprised that is really working well for you.

I think you should check out a Sony EX1. MUCH better in low light than the HVX and WAY easier to see focus on the LCD. Find one at a store an play with it.

Even if you could shoot 720p on the RED you'd be using a smaller part of the sensor and thus loose the benefit of the large sensor. Shooting 2k windowed will give you a sensor equivalent to 16mm, with a wide lens and a 'tight' aperture, you shouldn't have a problem shooting a sex scene with it.

No point shooting RED and then trying to match it to HVX, it'll just frustrate you.
