Trouble with screw for Scarlet MX side panel cover

For the first time since I've bought my Scarlet MX I realized I didn't really use the side handle for anything and I should just remove it and save the weight. I went to screw the panel cover in but I just can't get the screw to stay, it just doesn't feel like the screw is long enough to grab anything. It's possible I am using the wrong screws but they seem right! On a few tries I've gotten the screw to stay in but it still spins and is a half turn away from the panel popping off.

What would you suggest? Could I swap for a hardware store screw, if so anyone know what thread it would be?
