  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Transfer rate of RED drive via firewire 800 ?

Can anyone confirm the transfer rates of a RED drive via firewire 800. Does 750Mb per sec sound about right?
Whats the average time in the real world for transferring an entire RED drive to an external drive via a macbook pro? Thanks :smile5:

I usually average from fw800 out to esata drives 800Mb/s

Hi Jon,

The speed is determined by your slowest bus or drive. If you are on a Mac Pro, and transferring FW800 from the Red Drive to an internal SATA or RAID, you can expect about 700-800Mb/s (90-100MB/s) but this slows drastically if you are transferring to a drive that is also on the FW bus, or to an external USB etc.

On a Mac Pro going from FW to SATA it takes me about 30 minutes to transfer a full drive (300GB+.)

If I do the same thing, but to a FW drive, it takes about 65 minutes.

If I do this on a MBP, going from FW on the Red Drive to USB on the MBP, it takes about 200 minutes per drive!

Massive difference so your results will vary based on all of this.

Hope this helps!

Jim
