I have the Tokina 11-16 Nikon and the original DSMC Nikon mount. I works fine with all my manual lenses, but this one is giving me trouble concerning iris control. I can change it electronically, but it's sort of sluggish. You have to press the button several times and it sometimes hits some weird numbers (e.g. 5.2, 4.1, etc). Sorry for the vague explanation.

Does anyone have advice?

I was just about to order the Canon variant of this lens, but I must say that it is a bit troubling that you haven't had one reply yet! I am definitely not enjoying the problem that you have described in your original post. That said, if it is resolved with the impending firmware update, then I will probably go for it. I am sorry that I cannot contribute anything useful to your cause, however!

Issues aside, I have heard great things about the lens in general, and the small amount of footage I have seen is quite nice!

My experience with the canon version of that lens is the same. I've had the iris motor die on me before too (had to get it repaired) so I think it may just be a build quality thing? I don't know, but it's the sluggiest of lenses when it comes to iris change...never had it hit weird numbers though.

It's not the lens. It works fine on my Nikon.

This weekend I tried it again, and the Iris control on the Scarlet definitely did not work. The numbers on screen did not at all correspond to the actual iris setting.

Well, maybe yours isn't the lens, but mine has been wacky-irised way back when it was on my DSLRS ;)

Jonas,

I had the same issues with my Nikon lenses. The aperture on these lenses is controlled by a motor in the Red Nikon mount, so it won´t be an issue with a build in iris control like in the canon version.
My experience was that the choosen aperture did not actually match the adjusted aperture and had a variation from lens to lens. I ended up in using a dumb mount.

Cheers,
Ulf

So is there a problem with the Nikon Mount? I'll have to try it with some other lenses - normally I use old manual glass, where Iris is controlled on the lens.

AFAIK, although not officially supported the iris control on manual Nikon glass should be correct up from the AI-S versions, the aperture pin was calibrated/linearized for iris control since the introduction of AI-S for the Nikon FA. Before it was just meant to completely open the iris for the viewfinder and you have to allow it to be off. Also there are several fast lenses that won´t fit into the RED Nikon mount without modification.

Cheers,
Ulf
