  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The ones who have loved - Short shot on DRAGON

What did you light the scene with? Looks soft and beautiful.

Great looking stuff Tobias!

Thank you Matt, appreciate it.

As for lighting the scene - we set up the bed in our studio and I shot 3 600W HMIs straight on the bed sheet from one side only. The sheet covers the actors, that's where the softness comes from. At the same time, the sheet covers the front of the actors as well and bounces the light back at them. Extremely simple but effective.

Shot some new stuff today...

Thanks Filip. We're already on our way to the next location, but I can give you guys the R3D framegrab to play with. Can you share wathever you do with it?

thanks for providing that....i was looking for a raw file like this one....really nice shot!
still can't believe the noise everywhere with dragon files...this was shot at 400....nice highlight on shoulder but by saving that the noise (even in her skin!) just gets too out of control for me....

I agree, beautiful shot but lots of noise in the skintones. This is properly exposed as well so not sure why.

Nice images and subject-matter Tobias, sounds like an interesting film.

Thanks for the R3D too.

250ISO DRAGONcolor/REDgamma4 5200K, with everything else at default...

800ISO DRAGONcolor/REDgamma4 5200K, with everything else at default...

And just playing around with it a bit in REDCINE-X...

There is some chromatic noise in the shadow areas of the skin. Currently, an RCX Denoise slider value of 6 clears most of that up. 6 usually blurs deep reds too much IMO and I stick to 2 or 3 in those instances but, since there are none in this pic, 6 works just fine.

EDIT: For the record, I didn't mind the image before the Denoise adjustment.

D.E.B. is also supposed to alleviate the chromatic noise when it's finally available with what looks to be a very slight improvement in overall perceived noise amount as well.

After you've cranked Denoise to 6 for this image, I think what's left looks fucking awesome. Of course, there's nothing like seeing a moving image but the texture in the image is doing it for me.

When I put the view to "Fit Both," kill the side panels in RCX on my 30" monitor at roughly 2500 pixels across (it doesn't fill the whole screen due to the interface) and look at the screen from a non-pixel peeping distance, the image looks great, even at 1600ISO.

I'm sure she's moving, the leaves are moving and the camera may also be moving. No worries here.

Paul, if that's what you're finding egregious, you and I will always be at odds on this subject. I'm not seeing anything to complain about.

i put the Raw in my Beta Redcine with DEB.
first, i think, when you see the redlogfilm, there is much more space to open the lense, it is not really underexposed, but there seems to be bit more room to open the lense before clipping, as i can go up with iso and i keep the highlights well, that would give more light into the shadow. again this shows, Dragon is much better to let more light on the sensor. the clipping fear should be more and more less for any user...

right, with denoise +6 and DEB off it´s improved.

with DEB on, i achieved less red noise, and with a light additional NR like NeatVideo i am getting quite a clean shadow area (when you really want this, i can imagine that this image in movement will be much better) - best here may be a mask only for the shadows (2 seconds in da vinci) to put NR to this area.

honestly, here too, i see a very nice image, and the noise is not really an issue as you can handle it. i put this image on a 4K screen and it looks absolutely good.

i am sorry i am not allowed to post the image i did with "DEB on" at the moment, they are still improving the DEB ;-)

Great stuff Tobias!

As to any talk about noise. The only person that has to care about any kind of noise in these shots is well, Tobias.

Nice work.

i really don't want to be disrespectful and get into this here, which is why i posted about this in the olpf thread....

Thanks for your reply guys. Well part of the reason why it's as "noisy" as it is ("noisy" being the wrong word to me really) is probably user error. We were run-n-gunning hard (the farmer would have probably killed us if he saw us shooting in his corn fields), and that specific shot was with a cold camera that was not properly blackshaded (our Dragon was having trouble keeping the calibration stored at that time). Sooo yeah it's my fault. That being said - I honestly don't mind what I'm seing. Yes there is noise, but to me it's quite pleasing in motion. And as you guys mentioned - it's really easy to get rid of.

Looking forward to DEB - sounds very promising... :)

Thanks David!

New shot. Shot at night, only practicals lighting the scene, lots of mixed lights. Shot at 50fps, RED PRIME PRO 85mm, f/1.8
This will be a heavily composed shot with tons of layers, but I love it as is already. Can't wait to show you the motion...

Another day shooting. This is so much fun! I know I probably should not be sharing these already - I really only veeery crudely made a few adjustments in Photoshop, but hey, I like it already :) And damn, what a nice car. So much fun driving these roads in the alps...
