  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tekserve video confusion..

My understanding is, it's 1K for real-time, but the system can also do higher quality not real-time, up to and including full 4K with the highest quality demosaic.

There is no full quality 4K realtime debayer. You switch to lower quality, as proxy for realtime, or to good/high quality but then its not realtime.

Debayering 4K in excellent quality is pretty computing intense.

The realtime 4K DI options today are all uncompressed and use additional hardware or clusters. There are, among others:
filmlight baselight

dvs clipster
http://www.dvs.de/
quantel iQ / pablo

For the mid-level, where most manufacturers use a Nvidia Quadro graphic card to execute the colorcorrection and VFX, there is no 4K display out, and no "realtime" 4k unless you settle for few operations, as they simply don´t have the necessary 8 HD-SDI or 4 DVI and no additional dedicated hardware or cluster. Offers in that marketspace include:
discreet lustre

chrome matrix

iridas speedgrade and speedgrade on set

assimilate scratch

nucoda master series

SGO mystika

Then, there is Apple Color - ut still has several issues and "only" does 2K, but that will change sooner or later and then it will be certainly the widespread DI system.

Another highly interesting 4k option is, when you are rather doing shortforms (clip/commercials/stingers/bumpers/promos/trailers etc) indeed Adobe. Their CS3 supports 4k, and is integrated with AE.
With the Automatic Duck plugin, you can also integrate discreet combustion abd quantel iQ with Premiere.
combustion and AE have much more sophisticated VFX than any of the DI systems above -but- are somewhat slower and don´t offer a streamlined colorcorrection UI.

Medium and High quality at 1K extraction are currently realtime for playback in SCRATCH and layoff to video. 2K is close, but not there yet.

Correct. Keep in mind that you can switch at any time between 1K, 2K, and 4K extraction for checking frames, focus, etc. Any color manipulations are realtime.

What is not realtime is 4K extraction from REDCODE.

Just keep clear the distinction between file resolution (always 4096x2048), decode resolution (realtime at 1K, close at 2K, not close at 4K) and color performance - realtime at all resolutions.

Just got to remember that the size difference between 4K and 1K is a factor of 16 not 4 as is mentioned somewhere in the video. Thats quite a bit of difference in computing power required. (4K --> 2K is 4x)

Why would I want to grade realtime 4K? Does the colour change looking at a 2K proxy? If I'm grading real time 1K, I'm rendering out 4K yes?

Lucas,

What platforms does Scratch run on?

IBloom

I don't want to speak for Lucas, but from the demo I did with him last week, I believe the answer is SCRATCH runs on either XP or Vista.

ok so were only talking about .r3d files here. DPX I take it can be 2k now realtime? ( as long as raid supports 300MBs)

Absolutely. DPX is realtime at 4K with a fast enough pipe.

Why would I want to grade realtime 4K? Does the colour change looking at a 2K proxy? If I'm grading real time 1K, I'm rendering out 4K yes?

With R3D files, yes. Or you can also choose to render out at 2K with a resize.

Lucas,

What platforms does Scratch run on?

XP and Vista, although XP is still highly recommended.
