Has anyone had success in editing RED footage on a laptop, or is it even possible? If so, please let me know what PC based laptop you suggest.

Thanks,

Jeremy

do you have a good reason why you'd need to use a laptop instead of a workstation, or do you just think it would be more convenient?

it's technically plausible, but i'd really have to advise against it for price/performance reasons, and sheer limitations.

I have several workstations at our studio, but was planning on buying a new laptop since mine is about 6 years old. Editing would be done primarily on the workstations, but it would be great if there was as a laptop capable of editing RED footage. Plus, I really need a new laptop to transfer RED footage from the RED drives to external drives for an extreme climbing shoot on Mt. Ararat in Turkey. I don't think my 6 year old Sony Vaio will last in these extreme cold temperatures.

Yeah look out for USB 3/eSATA and tons of RAM. On the Mac side I'd say grab a new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt- which gives you the same throughput to hard drives and monitors as PCI-X does in desktop systems. But ya said PC-only.

haha, well that is a good reason. i agree with noah on the macbook pro. lots of ram, lots of storage, fastest interface you can find, mobile red rocket card. while i recommend pc workstations (based primarily on price/performance, don't anybody get up tight, you can put whatever operating system you want on there), i don't know enough about pc laptops to make a confident recommendation.

also, you'll have other considerations for keeping the equipment healthy and functional of course, but i've never taken anything other than a digital slr for photography or a miniDV camera when i used to film snowboarding in similar circumstances. of course it's always best to keep devices around room temperature and free from moisture or dust... not sure what you're battery charging situation will be, but they'll likely go quick when they get really cold.

I'd suggest buying the Dell Precision M6600.
- 17" 1920x1080 with good color gamut
- Up to 3 internal drives (RAID5 capable): 1x mSATA SSD, 2x 2.5" HDD/SSD
- Keyboard with Numberpad and Backlight
- Professional-grade GPU (Quadro, FirePro)
- Intel Sandy-bridge CPU
- 3 Year OnSite warranty as standard
