Sony Vegas 10 auto alignment accuracy?

Hi,

Well obviously this is a low-end software, but does anyone have experience with its auto-alignment accuracy? I wouldn't expect anything near Speedgrade or Mistika, but I guess it could give pretty good results with well aligned images to start with..

Also, does anyone know if any plug-ins exist for Scratch for the same purpose?

Auto alignment in Vegas is not so good, it clearly won't do a pixel to pixel analysis with warping but just a quick and dirty attempt at zooming/match and vertical aligning the two images. Results were far from satisfying in our tests. As for Scratch there is none to my knowledge.

Take a look at Ocula from the Foundry. It's not perfect, but is one of the closest things to what you're looking for.

Just curious, what do you guys think of the auto alignment tool in stereophotomaker? There are some excellent stereo scripts for AE. Where you can export an image pair from AE, align them in Stereophotomaker, and then import that alignment data back into AE. The alignment APPEARS fairly good to my eye.

Wow,

I’m not so up on current or emerging video tools but in the field of (stereo) photogrammetry that one has been done and dusted for several decades (at least for full blown photogrammetric workstations). I had assumed that most any stereo based video software (now) would have that one “down”.

Maybe to do it right presents the user with an annoyingly slow work flow??

Surely they have this one in the “bag” for some DI systems right?

The math is really not THAT bad. Nor the necessary transformations and computations that “heavy” to effect high quality “epipolar” geometry. Admittedly with un-calibrated high distortion squirrelly zoom lenses then things might be more difficult to sensibly pin down and resolve?

Well, I guess I can't pretend to be a professional after saying this, but I do use Stereo Photo Maker on low-budget stereo jobs (which is almost all there is here atm). It's decent if the rig's close enough, but sometimes it struggles.

There are Iridas Speedgrade, Ocula and SGO Mistika at least with this essential feature. The problem is that they are way overkill for the low-budget jobs. And also that would mean going overseas for the post.

The same is true for real-time boxes (do they even work well enough?).

Coding an universal plug-in for this would be btw a money-maker. But on the other hand it would be a money-waster for some of the big post-houses

Sony and several others have some rather impressive boxes, but don't expect to get quality gear for less than €25 000.
