  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SO.. Tascam is offering this.. may be useful to one man band projects

can't say I am loving the form factor, it's bigger than the camera

Nice feature set, just want to know the noise floor.
Looks like a very solid construction as well.

The Tascam DR40 is a great recorder. I like it better than the Zoom H4n. Cheap too at $175. Still need a better solution that can mount more easily.

i have a dr-40, and a dr-07... they are very handy compact recorders.

DR-40 + SD 302 FTW!

no time code - this makes it semi-pro and less useful with a camera that can output time-code. Unfortunately Sound Devices units are still the answer but they are large and not really camera mountable. if Tascam could add 2 more high quality mic pre's and time-code in a package that mounted on rails - it would be a winner!!!

I think you would feed the camera with this, not from it.
I see it as a budget mix pre with a dr-05 built in..
Sound devices already makes what you described.. the 744t
(well, you'll need to make your own rails)

AND.. this thing has amazing features for $350!!!

It looks very nice. The most practicle way to mount it is in sandwich between the tripod and the camera but I'm afraid this little box won't support the weight of a Scarlt/Epic+zoom+LCDE, even minimal. I tried to find the maximum weight allowed in the specs but didn't succeed. Anyone going to NAB coudl find this info please ? Thanks !

Dear god, you should not mount this under the RED!

I know, it would be far more practicle, that's all. If you're using this kind of recorder, it means that you're in a one-man band setup, otherwise you'd have a dedicated sound person. So you'd want, in that case, a light and minimalistic setup, not something with rods and an heavy tripod. So having the possiblity to mount it under the Scarlet/Eppic would be easier. Or mounting it on the top handle ?

By the way, you should leave god where he is, in fact he doesn't even exist, but that's a secret ;-)

Here's the thing, stick it on the bottom and the camera is not shoulder mountable. IF you are going to be on a tripod, then mount this to a tripod. A one man show without a sound guy leaves you putting a shotgun mic on the camera which is going to sound like poo anyway regardless of having decent pre-amps on this recorder. If ypu're going to mount this on the camera, use a noga arm and at hang it off the back of the camera. A smaller solution if you want better pre-amp than whats in the RED cameras is to use the Riggy micro devices.

Has anyone tested this unit?

What about Line Out into the Scarlet/EPIC?

Some of the features are enticing :)
