  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So how much fan noise to expect? (new to RED)

So I owned a Scarlet back in the day, and deemed it unusable for interviews and other events where live audio was critical (camera fan would kick in, was as loud as a hair dryer in high).

Now with Raven, where are we at with fan/heat management? I want to use this for YouTube content where again live audio is critical (I'll be using very sensitive mics). Can I expect to record ~20 mins at highest resolution without the fan speed changing or getting too high? I also noticed there is no more intake fan (?)....did that go away?

According to Jarred:

Cooling System improvements:

More like a complete redesign rather than an improvement.

When you put 4k or 4.5k or 5k or 6k or 8k into a camera the size of the Epic/Weapon/DSMC2 camera, your quite literally playing with fire.

On DSMC2, we changed the fan intake from the front to the top and the exhaust from the top to the bottom back and reversed the entire flow of air.. and sound, away from whatever it is your shooting. This one personally surprised me, and I actually would of bet money on it not working in reverse , as my armchair-backseat engineering- google searching head just always went with the " heat rises " concept. I was dead wrong. The new cameras run cooler, quieter and the sound guys get a lot less offended.

Even a Scarlet or Epic with the NEW FANS is almost SILENT.

All we shoot are in interviews. Never had a problem.

By all accounts, WEAPON IS WAY QUIETER.

I have to assume you'll be fine!!

It's no problem anymore at all

You probably shouldn't have lost patience; firmware improved things a lot and then the new fans pretty much made it a total non-issue.

This is REALLY great to hear! Thanks so much for the info - one less thing to worry about!

I shoot interviews on occasion with my Epic Dragon. Its always completely silent while rolling and depending on ambient temperature I can hear the fans when I cut, but never an actual problem when rolling.

I'd much rather have louder fan noise than risking the camera overheating again which is something we've experienced a couple of times. to counter the noise we've bought izotope's RX audio restoration software which will get rid of any noise in no time as long as you record a few seconds of "noise only". it doesn't take an audio wiz to use RX and you'll get great results in a minute. that's definitely worth the additional post work if you can save essential time on set.

but anyways, I'm sure as time progresses and new cameras and new firmwares appear fan noise will continue to drop.

I've been using Adobe Audition to remove the noise floor for all of my videos so I'm very familiar with the noise removal process....but even though I can do that, I'd prefer as clean audio as possible live on set that I can get as the sounds recorded are extremely quiet most of the time.
