Shooting anamorphic on scarlet dragon / 8:9 2x anamorphic

Hi,

Has anyone much experience shooting 2x anamorphic on scarlet dragon sensor? Unknown it will crop a bit. Also, is it only possible to shoot 8:9 2x anamorphic ratio on the red helium? Have sent seen it on any other red cam or sensor!? It’s lovely to shoot 16:9 anamorphic for live HD aspect ratio shows. Alexa mini is great at this. Yes I know I can crop / resize in post but I am looking for it to be done live straight down the sdi or hdmi pipe like the Alexa mini in 2x anamorphic 8:9 HD mode.

G'day Craig,

I've only had the experience shooting on the Epic where I can get usable framerates up to 2x desqueeze in camera. I know with the the Scarlet-x (the MX) I was only able to do that at 12fps on 5K and cropping the sensor didn't allow me to use the ANA mode. I shot on 4K and used an external monitor to do the desqueeze for me, but that is of course a workaround.

This is a desqueezed 4K crop with a 2x ANA on a 50mm taking lens (the ghetto/budget way of shooting ANA) ~ of course a longer lense would be better in this case to not get the barrel. However, for a HD crop it could work fine.

From my initial tests, I found it to be quite usable.

Again, this is a primative test with the Scarlet-MX shooting ANA. It is possible with the Dragon, as you get a larger coverage on the sensor with 6K~5K cropped. I am not so up to date with the Scarlet-Dragon 5K shooting ratios, as I only have MX boxes.

FWIW, I got fantastic results on the EPIC-MX with the in-cam DSQz with zero hicups and 3:1 (if I remember correctly) 50fps / 25fps Timeline:

Thanks Patrick, I owned a scarlet Mx for years and know all about anamorphic on red though thanks for fixing the time to dig out the photos. To dig more out of Scarlet Mx, you can also select an Overscan mode (can’t remember what red call it) which gives you a wider 5k sized viewing angle should you need and you are recording the sdi or hdmi out / going live to a screen etc (5k out the sdi is much cleaner too!).

I found this but it still doesn’t say much of anything about 8:9 /x anamorphic on the other red brains so I think it’s limited to helium only? 8:9 2x ana would be killer on gemini.
