I currently have a Sony EX-1. I had orignally saved my money to get a scarlet last spring but when the release dates had been pushed back, I wanted to get the ball rolling on making some short films and such now. So i bought a Sony EX-1 to start work ASAP.

But now that the release of the scarlet is creeping up, I have been thinking about selling my EX-1 NOW (before it loses anymore value) and using the money I get from that to buy a scarlet (more than like the 2/3 fixed).

Is this a good move? What do you think?

Thanks guys!

I had a Sony HDR-FX1 which I sold earlier this year, just because I wasn't using it. Despite all the improvements in HD cameras since I bought it in 2004, I still got $2k (CAN) for it. I think you'll find that the EX-1 will hold its resale value quite well, despite Scarlet, the 7D, etc.

new cameras don't make better movies...

Well, since you bought the camera to make movies and get the ball rolling, I would suggest that you keep making movies until Scarlet is released and readily available. Otherwise you just sit on money.

Or if you are not planning on becoming a DP, you might just want to sell your camera, work on a great script and then use the money to hire a DP and thus get much better pictures.

If you can make money using it, don't sell it - it's a good piece of equipment. Even with Scarlet in the game, there will still be a lot of occasions to use it.

Neither do new stories, screenplays, new actors, new directors or new anything. But they all CAN make better movies.

If cameras don't matter go shoot your next film on an iphone. Who cares! Cameras don't matter!

That's a bit too aggressive statement imho. Considering all the stuff that it takes to make a movie (not "a better movie", just a normal one), the camera you use, as long as it is a "real one", is pretty irrelevant.
