Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy the projector as soon as it is released for home viewing. I am wondering if a special screen material would be needed? My dream setup would be for rear projection, but with lasers being used, is it recommended? My setup would have a fair amount of ambient light, so I am looking low gain 0.8. What are your thoughts on the following? I'm not big on 3D. Thanks for the input!

Phil. Laser projectors per se do not need any unique type of screen for 2D presentations. Whether the Red projector will need a special type of screen material for 3D will depend on whether it will use a passive method or an active one. If active, it will need a screen with a high polarization extinction ratio. These screens are referred to as silver screens and one must chose one that has an extinction ratio of at least 200 and preferably 240 which is the defacto minimum for commercial theater silver screens. the problem is that silver screens are counter indicated for best 2d presentation. Choosing a particular material for 2D presentations depends on many factors including screen size, throw distance, the type of room environment including ambient lighting if any and the reflective Cy of the surrounding walls, ceiling, and floor not to mention the lumens output of the projector. Every indication is that the Red projector is many many months off still and the first that Red will introduce will be a commercial theater machine. Until final specs for a home machine are known it is premature to consider a purchase of a screen or two screens if both 2D and 3D are wanted and the Red projector uses passive polarization.

Yes, for 3d special consideration is needed on a front screen, but as you want high contrast in a fair amount of ambient light then it will be crucial to get good blacks and laser saturation. The 3m product in my threads I think maybe the one in the laser view tv, and I list to a laser projector engine company that lists more.

You should gather options then talk to Red about testing them out. If they have any sense they will buy these rear and high contrast in ambient materials and test them out and sell the best ones for their projector, it maybe $100-200 pure net after tax profit per sale. The market in outdoor advertising, displays and other rear projection uses could run from hundreds of thousands to millions for the right product, which means the instillation of these screens could be a big bottom line earner. We might see these things everywhere in years to come. Another reason 4k for $4k would be good, at that price even in a lot of private shop windows.

With a laser projector and a normal size home screen. high gain is the last thing I would do. High gains require a throw ratio at least equal to the screen gain to avoid hot spotting ( have certain areas of the screen look brighter than others from the same viewing position). The Red projector should have enough lumens not to need a high gain screen. A gain of one screen is the best for picture quality but requires a non reflective room. I will use another screen for 3D, one with a high polarization extinction ratio but low gain if the Red is passive 3D.Somethig like the Stewart Firehawk LS (not the regular Firehawk which has a low polarization extinction ratio) which has a high polarization extinction ratio but an overall gain of about 1.25. Because it is a positive gain gray screen, the throw must equal the sprayed on gain of 1.6, the screen gain is calculated by multiplying the substrate gain (here about 0.8 by the sprayed on gain, here 1.6, giving a total gain of about 1.25. Right now with my Sony 1000ES, I use a Stewart 1.0 gain Snomatt material gain for 2D and a Da-lite HP for 2D where I need gain (2.4) for the Sony's active 3D. Wayne. Could you please provide a link to the 3M material. thanks in advance.

Sorry, late confused my language, high contrast is what I meant. Material is linked on the thread I listed, with a few others, worth looking at. One of the old ones was the holoscreen.

Notice the video of the presenter screen cut into the shape of a woman, and how good the image is at exteme angles:

Claims good color reproduction. I wander how much aberration discolouring the small bead lenses might cause.

And here is one from another thread:

http://www.prodisplay.com/rear-projection-film.html

The interactive touch screen foil pages lists 4 screen types they use including the holo transparent screen.

Ok, here is a page with a few films they claim to have, but I cant even get a reply when I ask to buy some. Their links on this page goes back to this page it comes from. You could google to find where you can buy and original manufacturers. I thought I put this up, and others, in my thread, but it is not there.

Speaking of the Sony projector, does anyone know much about the newer display port version, that can do 60P ?
I'm curious if it has the same advanced upconverter as the old hdmi 1000es ?

I think RED has back burnered the projector for now, as the need has been somewhat filled by Sony.
Who knows when the rest of the projector companies will start nibbeling at the product ? I hope soon.

That's like giving Sony sales and a chance to catch up. Hasn't it been back burned enough. Here's to the possibility of an upgrade to 50p 8k and 3D version for $4k :) instead.

`` The MSRP for that one is $49K compared to the $25K MSRP of the plain Jane Sony VPLvw1000ES.

GT100 differences from VW1000ES:

• Signal Input Terminal adds 2 DisplayPorts, for 4K 60P capability
• Low Transport Delay
1080p/60Hz 95.8 ms
FilmMode:Off 62 ms
3840x2160/30Hz 41.2 ms
3840x2160/60Hz
(Vertical Split) 25.0 ms
• Improved Smear Reduction
Black Insertion at 30, 50, 75%
• Portrait Installation
GT100 can project standing on its side input panel (not the other way)
• Acceptable Input Signal
3840 and 4096 at 60P via 2 DisplayPorts
• Status All Off mode to eliminate on screen messages, etc.
• Image Shift Function to allow side by side images from 2 projectors to be shifted to panel edge toward each other

Market Target: Simulation Applications
