Scarlet-X #64 was delivered last Wednesday but I was away at the time and didn't get a chance to open it up until yesterday. After watching development since 2008 it's hard to believe that it's actually here!

I was stoked to get such a fantastic serial number! A power of two under 100, nice! I'm pretty sure that this is the first Scarlet in Queensland. From the limited testing I've been able to do so far it has blown me away. The dynamic range is phenomenal and the way it handles highlights is so smooth and natural. Here are a few stills from my initial testing of the camera, shot with Nikon lenses and graded in RC-X Pro.

I can't wait to receive a side handle so that I can get away from power outlets and see what this camera can really do. Thank you Jim, Jarred, Graeme, Rob, Dan my bomb squad rep and the rest of the team at RED for producing this amazing camera, I finally have a tool capable of producing the beautiful images I've always dreamed of.

Congratulations man ! I'm really happy to see finally someone using Nikkor lenses on Scarlet ! The images are incredible.

I can not wait any longer.
It hurts.

Does owning a Scarlet really make you a better human being? Looks like...
Checking mails every minute. Delaying shootings. For more than 2 months now.
Still in a thrill of anticipation. Andrew... I... I... envy... nevermind.

The Nikkor lenses are holding up really well - I'm looking forward to getting a RED Nikon mount though. The adaptor we have (Canon to Nikon F) can adjust the aperture but there's no way to know exactly what it is on the G lenses, and we can't get that metadata or use the auto-focusing.

I was just wondering if you were using an optitek mount or an adapter like the 16/9 that allows aperture changes. I got my answer ! ;)
As I now decided to go Nikon and RPZ, I'm selling my canon lenses. Nikon rocks !

Nice one, Andrew! I couldn't be happier for you. You actually took the time to light your test pics? Nice... ;)

Thanks, Joseph! All that time spent on ScarletUser back in the day was worth it. Hope everything's going well for you over in Dubai!

Yep, it's just a low end adaptor ring with an aperture adjustment tab as an interim solution until RED's electronic Nikon mount is ready. I was actually very happy with how solid it feels, I'd read some not so great reviews about them but it seems pretty good. The worst part about it for me is that you don't know your f stop unless you're wide open...

Congrats! I see that your using the Libec H38 head. I have that as well. How does it hold up with the weight of the Scarlet and Lens?

Hey Matt, it holds up really well, actually. Compared to tiny DSLRs which I used to most often mount on it, the Scarlet on this head feels like it's actually holding something for which it was designed. It actually balances and doesn't just quickly return to horizontal as soon as you take your hand off the handle. It comes with both the mounting screws you need for Scarlet as well. It even matches the battleship grey body, haha. I'm really happy with the H38.

N64!!!

The first job I've done with Scarlet #64 was some promotional clips for a drama group called The Hope Collective who are heading to Japan soon and had a performance in Brisbane last weekend. The Scarlet performed flawlessly and the benefit of the incredible dynamic range of the sensor was obvious, it was perfect for such a high contrast stage setting. I used the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, Canon 85mm f/1.8 and Canon 200mm f/2.8.

I'm currently rendering the 40 minutes of footage for delivery, it's going to take 28 hours or so on my mid 2010 i7 17" MacBook Pro. I was trying to get RC-X to perform two export jobs at once to max out the CPU cores but for some reason it wouldn't work with this particular export format.

Here's a still:
