  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W not powering up via Helix battery

If you haven't done so, please file a support ticket here and send us a log file from your camera.

*Update*

Had my Helix Jr. serviced by Letus. They replaced the board inside as mine was one of the early ones and they thought that might have something to do with it. It didn't. When I got it back I had the same symptoms.

Yesterday I went to the Red Store Hollywood to run some tests. Their Weapon, once more, powered up just fine. Their Scarlet-W had the exact same symptoms as mine (fans on for 1 second then off). So did their Raven. Then we tried their Epic and it also powered up.

So the only two cameras, for whatever reason, that can't start up with the Helix battery are Scarlet-W and Raven. I'm worried that because this is a more niche issue that there won't be a fix for this any time soon. Spending 18k on a camera is no joke... sadly I've had a Scarlet-W for a full month now and haven't used it once.

So the plot thickens! I sent in my gimbal to Red Headquarters as requested by their technicians. After some testing, I got an email back saying that they could not replicate my problem with their Scarlet-W or Raven (in other words, they both power up). So the current status of this whole thing is a little messy:

My gimbal *does not* power up my Scarlet-W, or the Scarlet-W at the Red Store Hollywood, or their Raven.

My gimbal *does* power up the Scarlet-W and Raven they have at headquarters.

Very strange indeed. Dropped off my Scarlet-W today and the technicians should have it by Monday/Tuesday. It appears that some cameras have this power-up issue, some do not. Hoping this can help others avoid similar issues in the future.

Tim, what's the latest? Was this ever resolved on your Scarlet-W?

Yes it was! Thanks for checking in. I had to send in my camera/modules and I believe the base expander I had was the culprit. They either replaced it or repaired it, I'm not too sure.

I used on my weapon and it worked great. I bet it's your cable

Oh just saw that you solved your problem yes I had to exchange my base expander once for a similar issue

Hey Tim, I'm a Helix owner and am waiting for my Scarlet W. I was wondering how the centre balance is with the DSMC2 V-Lock module? Do you have to add counter weight?

Cheers,
Ian

My Scarlet-W that I received today won't power up via my Helix Jr. The response I would expect to this would be "it's drawing too much power" which I understand is most likely the case... except for one thing. A month ago I went to the RED store in Hollywood to test and see if I can power a Scarlet-W off my gimbal. They did not have the Scarlet-W available and let me test it out using the Weapon 6k that they had. Using the 2-pin lemo to RED cable I bought from the Letus website (http://letus35.com/red-power-cable-for-helix/) this setup worked *FLAWLESSLY*. I finally had the light weight RED setup I've been dreaming of, without having to be tethered to the camera.

I'm pretty bummed out that this isn't working. Can anyone who knows the differences between Weapon and Scarlet-W please explain why this is happening? The Scarlet-W begins to power up (fans come on) and then after about 1.5 seconds it dies down. Any thoughts?

Hey was this ever resolved? I'm running into the same issue on my Red Epic-W with my helix

I brought my camera and v-mount expander to the RED store in hollywood and they took the expander in for diagnostics.
Did you take your helix in too?
Any info on what you did to resolve your issue would help, thanks

Tim,

FYI: We're also using a Letus Helix (regular magnesium) with the RED to Helix cable and I can 100% confirm that it at least works with our Raven. Our Scarlet-W should be finally arriving next week and I'll be sure to test it to see if powers up. If anything, our results may just help to see statistically how many cameras or modules are having issues.

Just tested powering our Raven and Scarlet-W off of the Letus Helix battery and I can confirm that they both work fine. Powered each camera for 5 minutes and recorded a clip just to be sure...

Yep it was definitely my base expander that they had to either repair or replace. It works fine now!

It was. I had to send in my camera as well as my gimbal and the culprit was a faulty base expander.
