Can someone point me to info on, or explain to me, the difference between the movie and still mode on the Scarlet? The Scarlet manual only mentions the DSMC handle being able to change between the two modes; no explanation on what that actually means.

In still I thought it would only capture a still frame off a full button push. I was way off on that. It records as it would a movie clip.

Hello somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's an actual still mode for the Scarlet X developed yet? Not sure if there ever will be.

Then why is the button there?

You can actually program the S/M Slider button yourself using Presets to switch your camera to operate more like a traditional "stills" mode on a DSLR.

Check out this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...e-to-shoot-stills-on-epic-(ie-not-from-video)

Essentially you can set presets so that when you push the slider towards "S," your record button will only run while you hold it down, then stop recording when you release it, much like a high-speed burst mode on a DSLR. Then, you can create a preset for the "M" end of the slider to restore your settings to your normal motion capture defaults.

If you do this, just make sure you always remember to switch back to M before rolling on a motion take. Also, this could seriously confuse someone if you ever rent out your camera and they switch over to "S" mode accidentally.

RED has also talked about a firmware update for some time now where you'd be able to press the side handle's "shutter" (red start/stop) button and it would just create metadata tags for where you think your ideal photos are on a shoot. It has not been released as of yet, though.
