Hi guys, just got a great deal on a scarlet recently. It will be my first Red. But I am tight on budget and I'm trying to get the essential necessities. so far I got a good deal on red volt batteries via eBay and it seems that the least expensive way to utilize them is to use the side arm. but what is throwing me right now it is monitoring. so the question is do I need the red touch screen LCD? I know that people recommended it. but is it really necessary? If I have the side arm control and I use an LCD through the HDMI port. will that work just as well? It seems to me like a lot of people said you can't see the menu if you do not use a red Pro screen? if I use the non read program will that help too? I am mostly shooting cinematic films and stylized commercials. I shoot mainly on manual lenses. all I really need as far as a yes it is is changing the settings and changing basic output input options. please help thank you

Welcome to REDUSER! I'm pretty sure the Scarlet will detect that no touchscreen is connected and show the menu automatically on the HDMI output, at least when you push the silver menu button at the top of the back face of the side handle, it should pop up.

Plus, you're going to eventually get better batteries than those small redvolts.

Yep, REDVOLTs are good for changing between V Locks and when you're trying to shoot short clips hand-held. As soon as you go on a tripod or shoulder, you'll want to go V Lock or AB.

I shot some clips last night using REDVOLTs and they were perfect for a stripped-down config but changing them every 20 minutes is pretty inconvenient when you need to shoot something continuously (like a band or a talk or a dramatic scene).

I sold my Sidehandle and redvolts and just use the red belt clip, it's great. The top handle is easier to hold, softkeys shortcuts on the screen are perfect, using buttons on the SSD for iris, buttons on the LCD for focus check and WB, the camera is so tiny and light without the sidehandle and batteries. Battery in my backpack or any small bag. The red 5" monitor is great. I recommend it.

At the moment, your options for controlling the camera are:

1) RED 5"/7" Touch LCD
2) Side Handle + any monitor
3) Switchblade + any monitor
4) REDmote + any monitor
5) Mobile REDLink app + (REDLink Bridge OR HOTLink) + any monitor
6) Mobile foolcontrol app + (REDLink Bridge OR HOTLink) + any monitor

For my first four months, I used #4 to save $ since I already had a monitor, but it was a headache trying to depend on the REDmote to connect wirelessly.
I've since bought a 5" TOUCH and it is well worth the investment. Reliable, quick to operate, light weight, and accurate color.

I'm assuming you mean DSMC SIDE HANDLE when you say "side arm," but that would be my second choice if I didn't own a Touch LCD.

Check out this thread for how people prefer to control the cam:

Buy from REDUSERs :)

I got most of my gear from everyone here.

Check users first then buy with confidence.

Welcome to RED Scarlet.

I love it and will be using mine for a very long time ;)
