  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET DRAGONS begin to ship

Is the Scarlet Dragons field of view for 5K equal to its field of view on MX at 4K? Or is it less or more?

FOV of Dragon at 5K is WIDER than MX at 4K.

Does this mean you're not having the noise issues the epics are?

I have to say, am intrigued also, if the Dragon Scarlets are exhibiting any of the same RED noise in blacks as recent Epic Dragons...

I just came off 3 weeks of shooting Epic Dragon and low light has been my biggest disappointment to the point that we mostly shot below 800 because of excessive noise. I'm curious to see how Scarlet performs as well because currently I don't consider Dragon anywhere near a 2000 ISO camera.

My expectation is that SCARLET DRAGON will deliver identical imagery compared to EPIC DRAGON when shot at the same resolution/redcode/shutter speeds. Other threads have gone into detail about how to understand the DRAGON's ISO characteristics, but suffice it to say that you cannot just crank up the ISO and expect the camera to brighten up the scene without adding noise. And one can especially not expect ISO 2000 to have good noise characteristics when shooting 3200K or below, except in very specific circumstances. This is because shifting from 3200K to 5600K requires more than two stops of amplification on the blue channel. So if you are shooting ISO 800 in tungsten, you are asking the blue channel to work as if it's ISO 3200-4000. Nobody ever said that would be noise-free.

The growing consensus is to rate low-light and/or tungsten scenes around ISO 320-400 and to rate brighter and/or daylight scenes at ISO 800. It is very counter-intuitive to use a lower ISO for a darker environment, but if you want to control noise, that's how you do it. Or rate it high and clean it up in post.

Brent and Jarred, How are things coming with the Scarlet dragon line? I put my order in on 6/3 still waiting for a shipping notice. Any sort of time frame would be amazing. Talked with my rep Colin and he didn't have too much info which i understand. A heads up would be great. Going into a feature REALLY soon and want my Scarlet Dragon as a B cam to my Epic Dragon that I currently have.

Let me know :)

Domenic,

We should be caught up in the next week so stay on the look out.
