Hey Redusers,
This is my first post on Reduser, but I've been reading things on this forum for a long time. I'd love to get some opinions on this from the truly knowledgeable community here.
I just received my new Scarlet Dragon this week, and I am noticing a strange image flicker or fluctuation in heavily underexposed situations. It's hard to explain but I think that after looking at the R3D you will be able to see it too. This is the link to the R3D: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_jmW-mTqLN0eUxjd2RlUWxWazA/view?usp=sharing
It looks to me almost as if the image is fluctuating slightly in terms of brightness, and there are some slight color shifts going on. After walking around my house and my yard with the camera, I can confirm that this only happens when the image is underexposed, the more underexposed it is the more intense this effect becomes. I sent a similar R3D to RED's support team, and they told me that after running some tests and viewing the camera log that this is not a hardware issue, and that it's normal - that basically this is what happens when the sensor hits it's noise floor. Now, noise is something I fully expect at 3200 ISO. So obviously it will be unbearably bad if the image is underexposed at that ISO, I get that. But what about this flicker/fluctuation thing that's going on? Does anybody else see this?
For example, obviously it's not ideal to underexpose like this but let's just say that I am shooting a doc, I have to shoot in a dimly lit situation and I am hitting the noise floor, and I can't add any light. Yes there will be noise. But am I just stuck with this flicker? Because if that's true it renders this camera useless in low light documentary situations.
This is my first RED cam, and so I'll be the first to admit that there will be some getting used to and that there will be a learning curve. Luckily these forums are a great resource and I have learned a lot on here. But this just doesn't seem normal to me. What do you guys think?
