Just putting it out there in case anyone comes across it. Basically every red item I own and every lens and computer was stolen today. Please keep your eyes open. Thanks.

Sorry to hear! If you haven't done so, make sure Red is aware so that if its ever serviced/upgraded they can get involved...

I already contacted red. They're great about this stuff.

I'll keep an eye out for #599 down here in the south bay/San Jose area. Hope we'll be able to recover it soon.

Stolen off the set or stolen from the hotel room?

I'm also curious about this, as I'm constantly concerned about my gear being taken from the hotel room, as well as when I'm on various concert shoots.

What happened?

I had just landed and picked up the rental car. I had all my equipment and drove right to the studio where I was going to shoot. I parked, locked up, went to say hi and confirm some things. Got back to the rental and the rear window was bashed in and everything was gone. It was at around 3:30 on 25th and 3rd in San Fran right in front of an active shop and construction area. It really really sucks. The more I think about it, the more stuff I remember that I'm missing and the more pissed I'm getting.

Michael this is a really sad news, Hope you get all your equipment back. Sorry for this.

I wonder if it's possible for RED to build in a "Find my RED" feature into firmware. I'm thinking something along the lines of having your camera monitor for open WiFi networks, and if the camera gets a ping from the owner through RED.com, then it will alert the owner where it is. I know this would only work if REDLink could tap into WiFi networks, and if the camera happened to be within range of one that is not password protected.

Another option could be this: If an owner logs into their account on RED.com and hits the "Find my RED" button, then the server sends back the most recent logs of where footage magazines were offloaded from that camera. This means that whenever REDCINE-X Pro connects to the internet, it would have to silently send a log in of camera mags offloaded and offload locations.

Maybe these options are too challenging, or could invade too much privacy, but some sort of LoJack system for your RED sure would be awesome.

I was considering making a "module" that connects to the back of the camera that simply is a dummy trap door thing that had a tracker in it. As long as it didn't make the camera too fat.
Or just hide it in the Side handle because I don't use the redvolts :P

I hear the old I left the car for 5 minutes and everything was stolen wayy too often. I had some lights stolen from my car, however I left them in overnight in a gated community... Which the gated community just left their back gates open for that week or something fucked up reason!? Regardless I should have brought everything inside, I was just really tired after a shoot =(

Certainly, this has been a topic of conversation on REDUSER since the early days when some ONE's were targeted.
Keeps coming up (and for good reason).

Though I am a firm supporter of having this feature, there are dangers associated with a central "Find my RED".
Imagine that RED's servers are hacked and the perpetrator works out the code to "Find all RED's".

A solution is required - but it needs to be extremely robust and secure to prevent a catastrophic breach.
