Hi All,

Just wonder if anyone can clarify for me that:

Is Scarlet recording 3K only ? or it can record or down-convert to 2k, 1080i or 720p ?

I am asking this because most of my work is still SD (yes, please don't laugh, I am not a big pro), very few customers ask for HDV. I hope the Scarlet would have option for lower-rez recording or provide down-convert option (an external device ?).

3K is far beyond what I need for my current business, but definitely I would like to have my personal stuff all record in 3K, just great!

And also, any hint when the reservation will be open ? I rarely access internet these days and I don't want to miss the early chance, I want 2 Scarlets.

Many Thanks~

All we do now is wait for news from the big guys. And that will take a little while. Just keep shooting along. Don't be ashamed of SD. Just keep getting better at your craft. In a year you'll be ready for your Scarlet.
Don't worry about reservations. If Red goes that route you'll feel a loud rumble under your feet from everybody running to their bank and you'll know for sure. Hopefully they will have about 1 million cloned by the time they are ready to sell, in a year. Everybody want a least 2!

I believe that it does 2K windowed, which would be absolutely awesome for SD. Shooting HD (2K is a little bigger) for DVD delivery looks far better than anything I ever shot on an SD camera. Also, it gives you options for re-framing and cropping if you need it. Or, you can go crazy with image stabilisation in post, and still be downscaling!

The only downside is that it will take a little while to transcode. But I still think that the positives far outweigh this.

Thanks for clarifying

Thanks for clarifying

Thank you very much John & Stephen for your courage & clarify.

So the feature of recording lower resolution is not available in Scarlet. I would hope RED team will consider to build this function in Scarlet if it doesn't cost too much to do (or increase the size & weight of Scarlet significantly). Just like my Canon 5D allows me to take picture in various resolution & format (raw & jpg).

Doing everything in post is definitely possible but it seems unnecessary if you know from the first stage that your client just doesn't need 3K or 2K. And you won't need to invest in buying lots of CF or portable HDD or having a laptop with you on the field.

But if Scarlet won't put in down-convert or lower-rez, I am still a happy man, USD 1 dollar for 1 pixel, and 120fps, sound too good to be true :D.

Okay, I have to get ready for Scarlet, I'm off to learn more solid camera skill, chat to you all next time.

Many Thanks~
