Hi, What do I need to run two Scarlets in sync for a 3D shoot?

This is for a freebie in a couple of weeks and I'm using a pair of Scarlets from two owners. In other words they're not coming from a hire company, and any additional bits n bobs will likely have to be paid for out of my own pocket so I'm trying to keep costs down.

I have a Gen10 and all the monitoring gear. Will likely be using a Hurricane rig. What else do I need? Am prepared to live without identical timecode on both cameras and go with a clapper :frown5: but I clearly need to genlock them.

Cheers!.

EDIT: Just been told we have access to all the leads that go with the Epics and RED Ones, in case any of those happen to do the job..?

Hi Karal,

According to my BS rep you just need the Gig E cable for master slave and the Scarlets will sync for 3D. Sync boxes are used for more advanced functions. I have no first hand experience yet, though.

Steven is correct.
the two streams might be a few frames out of sync, but they are pretty much in phase in regards to shutters.

We have to be careful about confusing the term 'sync'. There is camera-to-camera sync of settings and actions. Thats what the GigE cable is for. That allows you to have settings mirrored on the slave so you can essentially run both cameras from the master's UI. Synchronizing the shutters will require the 3BNC to Lemo cable, one for each camera and a genlock signal source shared by the cameras. If you additionally add timecode, RedcineX can try to automatically align the clips for you. Without the genlock signal, you can not expect the shutters to be in phase.

Karel, have you got things sorted now, or are there still questions?

If thats the model that has the boosted drive on the video connector, yes. I couldnt tell from their website. That be a modification they have to perform. You need the boost to allow you to 'T' the signal to both cameras. The Ambient 204 is another option. Or the Aja Gen-10, but you dont get timecode from the Gen-10. I have seen the non-boosted Ambiet into a T work, but its not recommended.

Dave,

Could you tell me how I can be sure I am getting the Denecke SB-T with the boosted drive on the video connecter?

I have two red epic on p+s technic 3d rig.
Genlock is crucial. I have Ambient lockit. Works perfect. It has time code also
Aja hi 3d is ok for anagliph monitoring. Very usefull for aligning.

Best,

2 x 3BCN cable
Ambient ACL 203 or 204 or Deneke SB-T
T Piece BNC x 2
Remote stop start trigger

Option
Epic Gig E cable

What helps is to buy 2 x 4 pin lemo to open end and make a parallel 3BNC to 2 lemo cables and wire them in parallel to BNC plugs to tidy up the cabling.

Thanks for the information and clarifications. Also on the monitoring suggestions. Any suggestions of the stop/start trigger?

YOU ALSO NEED A giga-e cable. I use ambient as genlock. It runs well. Beware of the cables, they must be hight quality or there will be always a temporary sync lost. SDI cable for monitoring must be same length or there will also be some error always for 3D monitoring.

gigaE cable is really just a convience thing. I've done several shows that didn't have it and while it was a big pain in the ass it didn't prevent us from shooting. For it's cost I highly recommend it though.

So please excuse my silly question, but instead of using a T piece for the genlock and TC signals, can I not use an AJA 3G (HD-SDI) distribution amp for the genlock signal, and a good ol SD video distribution amp for TC

In the UK, you can rent a 3D modified Denecke with the T Bar Bnc from Richmond Film Services for around £16 a day. Those guys are great. I don't work for them but I rent the uni off them a lot. Let's you sync frame rates n multiples of 24 and 25. There was a read here somewhere that showed how to genlock the cams using an AJA Gen10 but I can't find it. I'll keep looking.

I genlock with Aja Gen10 all the time. Works great. No T-pieces required as Gen10 has more than enough outputs. The genlock is very reliable.

However, it will not give you TC. I found that when running at 24...48 fps, rarely there is any offset between the eyes. I also found there may be up to two frame offset when recording at higher speeds. You can use clapboard or you can use TC generator to make sure there is no offset between R and L clips.
