Can some one from this forum please do and post a side by side test of red dragon sensor vs. 35mm film. Would love to see the dynamic range and colors pitted gainst the gold standard that "FILM" is...

As the destiny of digital image capture and ultimate goal is to beat film and exceed it in terms of overall image quality, it would be great to see this sensor, which was hyped and marketted as "THE" sensor that will have more DR than film and will retire it, in a side by side test with film.....

Sorry guys, i accidentally gave you guys the wrong idea with the heading..... should have used the word request...

I did a similar test, with side by side cameras of an outdoor scene with the Epic MX.
Red blew film away. The thread is here on RU somewhere.

If you want to do this test in LA. The Camera House has our Dragon Epic and probably a 35mm camera. Pay for film, do the test at their facility and the Dragon rental is waved. Get a good DP like Matt Ryan or Evin Grant on board.

Cheers, would love to see the results.

The ASC did this kind of comparison a few years ago with their STeM tests:

I think the general conclusion was the same one I have: the choice of camera is like choosing a particular emulsion or lens over another. They each have plusses and minuses, there's not always a clear-cut winner, and the real differences lie in the lighting and the skill of the cinematographer.

It's clear that film is very much on the way out, just because of the lack of available developing labs. I don't think crowing about the superiority of anything to film proves anything at this point. A more important question is how Red compares to all the other challengers, particularly the new 4K cameras about to be unveiled at NAB on April 7th.

I can show with a DRAGON and an Arri 35mm camera. If it can be done in San Francisco I can provide ample lighting a large studio, grip, gaffer, camera operator and a film loader. Anyone else want to take care of providing film, processing and scanning?

I remember your test Les (we're talking the same test, kid in a cap and others?) but in my opinion film was far superior in overall feel than MX.

The only part of film scan which was in any way that much superior to MX was the grain structure. Be it the sensor quirks or lossy R3D compression, MX's texture with some heavy digital artifacts didn't look pretty in comparison. But then again, in other test F65's raw footage had a little too much chroma noise in comparison to film scan.
