PhotoRec....
data carving program for windows

I have used this program for a while for some data recovery stuff.
I thought I would try it on my 16gb Red Cf card.

It was able to extract the quicktime files from 2 formats ago...but however the program works on recovering only the extensions it knows....and .R3D wasn't one of them.

So I emailed the developer,Christophe GRENIER, and sent him a few file samples and asked him to add the extension.
I figured since it was open source and a free program, I wouldn't get much of a response. Well the guy emailed me back within hours and requested some other .R3D files...and a few days later emailed me to tell me he had a working version.

Needless to say I was floored with this level of service for a free program....

Anyhow

go to his website and download the version 6.12 WIP

i have only tried this on my CF card but it worked pretty well and extracted quicktimes and .R3D's from 2 formats ago.

Take note...there is limits what "Data Carving" software can do....basically if you deleted it and formatted it....that's not a problem to recover, even if you recorded on the card afterwards, as long as you didn't fill it up. If you deleted it formatted it and recorded over it and filled the card right up, your probably be out of luck.

If you have any problems post them here so I can let Christophe know what works and what dosn't
REMEMBER THIS IS A WIP AS FAR AS R3D SUPPORT

Also remember this is not just for Red files....it has over 200 extensions in it's list that it will recover....alot of different video formats among them. Versions for Mac and Linux as well...

I'ts mainly a command line exe...but it's very simple
There are a few tutorials on his site....

I believe you can limit the extensions it searches for to speed up the process...i.e. just tell it to look for .R3D

Remember to download version 6.12 WIP as this is the only version with R3D support.
Also if you really like it you could throw the guy a donation...

Let me know how it goes...
