  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Station Compatibility?

Jason, the Mac Pro internal ports are not esata. They are sata. The important difference is that the sata port spec does not include hot-swap capability. So you'd have to re-start the mac every time you wanted to mount a new SSD.
 
I have a highpoint card that worked fine with Snow leopard, now very iffy with Lion. Works in only some slots and with some drives now where it didn't care before.
I think theres an issue with the built in sata drivers in Lion.
 
In addition to HighPoint, the ATTO and ARECA SAS/SATA hosts work with the RED STATION. The Sonnet cards work, but not under Lion. CalDigit 2EX ExpressCard adapter works. CalDigit 6GU3 card works. Have not tried their (CalDigit) older PCIe cards. Their older FASTA-1ex ExpressCard works under Snow Leopard and Windows7, have not tested on Lion.

Mac Pro SATA ports are finicky as it gets. As pointed out, they are not "e"SATA and have issues with a lot of devices.

The problem is not with the RED STATION at all, it's with the various adapters and their drivers. Compatibility seems much better on Windows than on the Mac. I have personally tried all the cards above that I have listed. I am primarily using my RED STATION SSD readers with the ATTO H680 6Gbps SAS/SATA HBA. Performance is rock solid. Using the CalDigit FASTA-2ex for ExpressCard.

Not sure why RED's info is only saying HighPoint and Silicon Image... I would say the ATTO H680 is one of the most popular adapter cards on the market right now for Mac Pro users as they're the most compatible solution for LTO tape units and a few other devices.

Oh, also works fine with the 3Gbps ATTO cards too, like the H380.

Compatibility is a often neglected subject! In TV industry you have hundreds of dating formats worldwide and none of these formats is able to explain people who is longterm compatible with whom and why. Although there are more than 10 serious scientific compatibility tests worldwide ...

Those were teh two original cards we tested/qualified.
We have not officially qualified other cards as pretty much everything out there works except for the lion issues.
The Atto cards have been great. one of our favorites.
 
Another observation I have about Lion with compatibility, is that Lion seems to be more finicky on previous models of Macbook Pro systems and still glitchy in various ways on the Mac Pro. If I were running a Macbook Pro from 2010 or earlier, I would probably stick with 10.6.8 for now.
