I'm starting to feel a good anticipatory buzz growing for the REDRAY, set to be fully revealed on November 30th. We're only a few days away so it's time to get the pre-launch chatter humming.

Awesome.

So looking forward to the announcement. And good finds...there were a couple pieces I hadn't read. Somehow I expect Jim and/or Jarred have under promised ,with tomorrow being the over deliver. Wouldn't be surprised if these are both in the Red Store in about 24 hours.

Well, 3d Bluray players are 68 bucks at walmart, Why not a $1000 dollar Red ray. Or Cheaper. Do it now Before Asia does it.

Here's the announcement from Jarred:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?90306-REDRAY

And this is the discussion thread on that announcement:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?90304-REDRAY-ODEMAX-Comments

Jarred was posting information while the discussion thread was active so you'll need to skip the first few pages of comments to catch up to where all of the details were available and everyone was on the same page.

Simply put, $1,450 gets you the RED Ray player. It offers 4K and "1080 preview" playback over HDMI 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. You encode content using REDCINE-X into a .RED codec which offers playback at 2.5 MB/Second. Content will be serviced by ODEMAX which will offer content producers 'channels' to sell content at a 30% royalty share. ODEMAX is a cloud service and Jarred hinted that the Sundance Film Festival and much more will be dependent on the service next year.

The RED Ray player begins shipping at the end of December and pre-orders are available now:

If you order today (November 30th), you'll probably be in the January release group but expect that backorder list to grow quickly.

Pretty damn impressive all around.

2.5MB/sec for 4K- are we talking about streaming?

20Mbit AVC (nothing is really more efficient currently, neither REDCODEC) is level where HD can be very, very transparent (with source like RED footage)- like it happens on BD discs, but for 4K it's rather ok level, specially taking into account that your are going to watch it on big TVs. It will be like watching clips on Vimeo- some say that there are so good, other say to much compressed.

What is REDRAY internal storage format? REDCODEC at what compression ratio?

Thanks, Rob. Would like to see the same for the projector, as I dig around for tidbits.

hmmmmm, maybe it's already answered somewhere but: any kind of 'software player' for the upcoming .red format?
or will software players like vlc, quicktime and co be enabled to play these files back with a codec install?
best, norbert
