Any thoughts on the most efficient way to play back L and R 2k 120fps after transfer, from a machine with a RED ROCKET installed, to a 3D monitor?

For now you will need to render out a side by side in RCX and play in QT player or FCP. The problem with PatC suggestion is playback of 2 x R3Ds with 1 RED Rocket will result in dropped frames. If that doesn't matter then that's the way to go.. would love to test full screen playback of L and R muxed files in RCX with TWO RED Rocket cards. Your Desktop could be played to S3D monitor via HDMI...... anyone tried this?

Render out side by side and then import into my Qtake. Output to 46" Panasonic 3D monitor. I know this works as I did it as a test on Thursday.

3D playback with Qtake works. IDK about the 120 FPS, but definitely up to 60. I think you might be able to slow it in qtake to 120, but not sure.

there was some process in qtake where we downloaded all the frames from the phantom and played them back at 24fps. They were shot at up to 500fps but the Qtake only ran at 24 when we did it. This was not the same process as downloading from the cinemags, which was real slow, but what we were doing for playback was also not real time. You need to ask a Qtake expert. I am pretty sure it can do what you need.

I have a lot of experience using QtakeHD for 3D playback. I did all the off speed 3D playback on Jackass 3D. We used both RED and Phantom Cameras. Here is the process..

We recorded full frame left and right eye on the Qtake Hd HDX2 running a on Mac Pro Tower. We could provide standard old "Simulated Film Speed playback" in sync immediately. This method is quite Jerky at 120 FPS (20% speed) but can playback instantly which is beneficial because you can see quickly if you need to take the time to play back at full FPS.
Mostly we just immediately started recording the playback out of the camera at speed.
Camera would cue up the Left eye and Right eye and begin the playback I would then capture both playback streams at what ever frame rate was shot. 120 on Red and 1000 on Phantom. While camera was playing back I would set my 3D out to the 3D monitor to 2D (left Eye only). The offset function in QtakeHd is the key to this playback since the cameras cannot be started in exact sync on playback. Once they had watched the playback in 2D I would quickly find the correct frame offset to bring the cameras in sync and I would switch the output to 3D and playback 3D in perfect smooth slow motion.

QtakeHD is a very powerful HD video assist system which handles all the Stereo combining. It can flip or flop the cameras as need for any rig, it can output in industry standard 3D modes, Side by Side, Line by Line, Top/Bottom or DLP MUX.

I also used QtakeHD on Pirates 4 second unit. Some scenes were shot with zero parallax. We used the Axial adjustment in QtakeHD to provide a little offset for 3D viewing. It sets the distance between the eyes as needed by the Stereographer. Using the Muxer Module and 2 Kona 3 cards in QtakeHD we were able to capture 2 stereo rigs, 4 HD feeds, and record them muxed to each of the 2 recording channels. The muxer allows to set flip and flop as well as axial adjustment for both of the muxed feeds. It also allows us to demux any recording that was recorded muxed so it can be viewed on a 2D monitor and the Muxer will allow us to playback 3D and 2D simultaneously.

My company NEBTEK is the official QtakeHD dealer for the western United States, Chicago and East is handled by OFFHOLLYWOOD NY.

Please feel free to call me at any time I am happy to answer any questions you may have about QtakeHD.
