Is it possible to use RED Epic on the Moon?

I have compiled 3D image of the surface of the Moon using NASA's 2D images from the Apollo mission and decided to investigate if
private journey to the Moon with RED Epic camera would be possible.

Here is the 3D image (cross-eye). Note, that the 2D snapshots ware made using unshielded Hasselblad medium format film camera.

May be the camera is immune to X-Ray radiation.

those were taken in the desert. what was it the mojave desert? or was it death valley....not on the moon.
NASA states that those are original and unedited HiRes genuine images shot on the Moon.

I think Johnny was jokingly (or not) referring to many of the conspiracy theories that proclaim the Apollo moon missions were faked. Most of these consist of speculation and guesses and have been debunked by actual science. As far as a private journey to the moon goes, you must be joking as well. The only country that has officially stated plans for a manned mission to the moon in the near term is China and they have been vague about the specific time table. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/sci/2012-09/19/c_131861211.htm Well funded and closed society that China is, I seriously doubt they would allow a private individual to join such a mission.

Jim is a very conscientious, proactive guy and surely adventurous. His company Oakley was sold to Luxottica in 2007 for $2.1B, but I doubt he got all that money for himself. Even if did it wouldn't go too far with regard to getting him or anybody else to the moon. According to Nasa.gov, "Answering President Kennedy's challenge and landing men on the moon by 1969 required the most sudden burst of technological creativity, and the largest commitment of resources ($24 billion), ever made by any nation in peacetime". According to http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/ that cost today would be $150,656,566,757.49. If three guys could fit in the rocket, your share would only be about $50 billion give or take.

It would seem that infrared light pollution or xray contamination would be one of the smallest practical challenges with your plan. I recommend a trip to the desert.

On a separate note, if you converted that 2D NASA footprint image to 3D, you did a great job.

No, those are not converted but simply aligned. Those images are accidental cha-cha type stereo pair and since there is no motion on the surface those seem to be perfect.

On the private mission to the Moon, I was thinking about just a small probe large enough to carry a single RED Camera with stereoscopic adapter.

I would built such craft completely out of my own pocket without asking for sponsorship or donations.

Such 3D footage would surely compensate for my investments.

Here is another accidental cha-cha shot on the Moon:

Another concern is the vacuum of space. I think that RED Epic would need to enclosed in a atmospheric tight chamber because it contains electrolytic capacitors which would simply liked out the electrolyte in vacuumed environment.

Are you putting us on or what? If you could personally build a spacecraft capable of traveling to the moon, WTF are you doing wasting your time posting to REDUSER.net?

I have never done that: "put anyone on ".I am serious and not wasting time. Just collecting opinions and advices on technical aspect of such mission.
It is a starting point and digital imaging part of it discussed on the World's best digital camera forum should be considered as most appropriate.

true - NASA faked the moon mission...

See my note above.

Our team has this covered with a full pressure casing that also shields the Epic from various radiation. We'll be 'testing' on the lunar surface in July 2013 - our rocket launch is being handled by a private company that made money on the late '90's .com boom. Our goal is to prove that NASA never got to the lunar surface and we'll do it with footage in 5k (or higher if Dragon ships early).

Sorry Maciej - but it looks like we'll beat you to the punch!

NASA faked the moon landing? You can't be serious. Is it April 1st?

I've been to the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. They have been shooting lasers at the retro reflectors the Apollo astronauts left on the moon for 40 years.

This is not a NASA funded enterprise, and the presence and location of those reflectors have been verified many, many times by independent observatories around the world.

The LRO mission has sent back multiple images of the landing sites clearly showing hardware left behind. Oh....right, that is a NASA funded mission! Faked pictures!

And while we are on the subject of fake stuff.... Claims about privately funded, built and piloted rockets to the moon kinda rank up there in my opinion.

Perty cool ... there is a class on fxphd that takes single camera footage and 3D's it using nuke 7 ... would be fun to take some Nasa video footage and 3D'ize it.

From a camera hardware viewpoint, main change to the epic would be adding a zero atmosphere "heat pipe" that would replace the fan (heat pipe is a sealed pipe with fluid that evaporates, then liquifies in a cooler part of the pipe which radiates black body heat).

dream on.... High quality footage or rare, ground breaking footage of amazing events or locations is not in demand at all.
However, if you had low rez, shaky iPhone video of Obama having a sex with Julia Gillard you could probably fund a manned trip to Mars and back :)

...either that or you would have to hole up in the Equadorian embassy....

Termperature control of the camera could become an issue as the current design relies heavily on air cooling. Some serious support and remoting hardware would have to be designed, software written and donkeyproof integration with the camera OS achieved. A pressure chamber might be best for the camera. In a vacuum environment, there is no guarantee something may not go across between neighbouring circuits on the boards that thus far the insulation of air itself may have dealt with.
