Qt output is too bright with Build 20 (v20.1.3) and Redcine v20.0.0

Hi to everybody,

I just installed Redcine v20.0.0 and if I do the output with Qt the picture is much brighter than in Redcine. If I export any other format the color stays.

I jumped back to the previous version of Redcine and there is everything fine.

Anybody any idea what causes this bright export in Qt?:confused1:

I've noticed this also. I'd describe it as elevated black levels.

Using Version 20 on a quad core PC. Previous versions had black in the right place.

Anyone else see this on their system?

Recine 20.0 - produces RGB quicktimes, Redcine 3.1.8 - produces 709!!!

I figured out why the black levels are messed up in quicktimes in Redcine 20 and moreover, why DNxHD quicktimes don't always fast-import!!!

I took a shot I had which had some issues with black levels in the resulting quicktime output from Redcine 20 and then re-installed Redcine 3.1.8 and rendered out the same clip with the same settings.

The results?

The DNxHD quicktime produced from Redcine 20 WAS ABLE TO FAST IMPORT INTO AVID...but the blacks were washed out (much akin to the ever so problematic "601/709/RGB switch" in the media composer import settings)

Meanwhile...

The DNxHD quicktime produced from Redcine 3.1.8 had perfect black levels, but was NOT ABLE TO FAST IMPORT INTO AVID.


I realized the problem is most likely some sort of metadata flag in the quicktime files, which could explain both why they do and don't fast import and why the black levels are being misinterpreted.

I found a program called "metadata hootenanny" which lets you see all the metadata hidden in a quicktime file (http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html)

Upon examining my two tests - it came up with some startling results under the "video format" metadata section for each quicktime:

The Redcine 20 DNxHD quicktime had a "video format" of "DNxHD RGB Codec"

meanwhile...

The Redcine 3.1.8 DNxHD quicktime had a "video format" of "DNxHD 709 Codec".


THUS...the reason why the black levels in our DNxHD quicktimes are looking terrible out of Redcine is BECAUSE RED CINE IS BUMPING THE QUICKTIMES UP TO RGB OR IS MESSING UP THE METADATA.


This should be something for them that should be really easy to fix. Can someone at Avid get in touch with them asap???

For the time being, avoid Redcine 20 if needing to produce quicktimes for Avid with proper black levels.

If you want proper black levels, you'll have to export your DNxHD quicktimes out of Redcine 3.1.8 and sadly lose the option to fast import...
