A rental house has recently shown interest in renting out my Scarlet on consignment. Consignment is new to me so I had a few questions.

Who should be responsible for the renters insurance the owner or the rental house?

What is a fair split for the revenue generated from rentals?

Any other things to know when making an agreement with the rental house?

I have insurance on my gear, but typically the houses that I worked with required insurance from those who rent from them. Make sure they do that.

A fair split is 60/40 in your favor depending on how much gear you own. If your package is bare bones and they'll be providing a lot to make it more rentable, expect the split to be different. They should also provide you with a discounted rate on their ancillary gear should you want to use some.

Find out how many other cameras they have and how often they're moving them. Look for reviews or find out who's rented from them in the past. Get the feel for the kind of projects they rent out to. Independent projects vs. big commercial projects could tell you how often and how much you stand to make. Are you one of many Scarlets? Are there a lot of Epics there? Those will likely get rented out much more often. How much do they intend to rent your package for? Do they do 3 day weeks for their rentals?

BIG ONE: when you are ready to take out your camera, how much time do they need to know in advance?

Hope that helps.

I am also interested in the concept but the market seems to be saturated in my area (nyc). Tried lots of places, no bites, then basically stopped trying. Can't believe they don't have many already in stock these days...

It really depends on the local market. NYC and LA were of course some of the first places to get Epics / Scarlets back in 2011. But the farther away you are from these large centers, the fewer Reds you find. This can be great if there's a need and you are willing to rent yours out. It can be hell if you need one right away and the nearest Epic is 500 miles due east of where you are camped. :-)

I have a full package with both ef and pl mount rail support shoulder mount mattebox with irnd filters media red pro 5 side handle cineroid viewfinder and atomos samurai. Their initial offer was 50/50 and they are fairly busy they had to purchase three c300s to cover demand. I have production insurance but not renters insurance. I believe that more than 50% of my income cannot come from rentals under my production insurance. I know the rentee must have their own but does the rental house provide Renters insurance?
