Wanted to run this by the forum to see if anyone else has run into this issue.

During a job, I noticed a weird issue when I'm in prores mode as my main video capture format. (not shooting R3D)

When I finish playback on a shot and return to the camera side for recording, the video get's extremely dark. There's no way for the video to go back to normal, unless I reboot the camera.

When I do playback and go back to record mode in R3D recording mode, the same issue is not there. It's only when I'm in prores mode.

I was shooting 23.98 at 172.8 and the settings stayed the same in both modes and when the problem persisted. I was also using the DSMC3 Red monitor. I was only viewing the footage on the monitor. Granted there is a good amount of bugs in this monitor, including the whole guides thing, where I have to remove the guide feature from the top lcd, if I decide all of a sudden I do not want 2.39:1 frame lines.

If anyone can try this out and let me know if this is a common issue, that would be great. Thank you.

With a PortKeys BM5 III WR, I don't see this with the same prores settings. Tried 4k 4:2:2 with and without a LUT, Rec.709 and 2020.

This happened to me at the beginning of the year. The issue is with your guides when coming back from playback while shooting in ProRes. You can toggle your guides when this happens to fix the issue without restarting your camera, or...

SmallHD released a new monitor firmware after I reported the issue, and it seems to have fixed it. Here's a link to the newest firmware:

https://downloads.smallhd.com/firmware/red-touch

Give this a shot, and if it doesn't work contact RED support.

Thanks Drew. yup, toggling off the guides fixes the issue. It only happens when the guide is on. Monitor is already updated to 4.8.3, so the issue still persists, but at least we know it's a guide issue. Honestly, that's been the biggest headache with this monitor. The guides still give you weird glitches. Not sure who I should talk to, to alert of the problem.
