  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forgive me if this has been discussed before.

Since we don't really know that much about the camera, except it's going to be great, and we know how RED always brings a revolutionary camera at a price much lower than the nearest competition, should this camera be... $1,000-$5,000? Maybe it's to soon to start speculating...
 
If it's in the price range of the D90 and the likes I guess we can be pretty sure it won't deliver more than HD video. That is, if Scarlet doesn't change substantially.
But I believe it will redefine the term 'modular' and thus there might be a reasonably priced base module like with 'One'.

As Red products seem to cost 25% of the competitors, expect a very low price.

Personally I'm hoping for a $1000 or less. However I think it will be more expensive, say $2000, followed by a cheaper and a more expensive model later on.

It makes more sense that way, you need to get the production going before you can enter the "mass market" price of $1000 or below. You can only produce so many cameras initially, find out in what price range you can sell as many as you produce. Higher price means less sales, but if the production isn't up to speed yet that's no problem. You will also get a lot of feedback from customers on which features people would spend more money on (enhanced features for the expensive model) and what features could be dropped for the cheaper model.

I'm shooting myself in the foot here. :ninja: :whistling:
 
Maybe something to change the landscape a bit between 35mm and medium format.

As of now we have Sony and Canon pretending to be a medium format camera. - noise, noise...oh, noise. ;)
Needs a bigger sensor...

...take note of the Kodak 50mp sensor in the hasselblad...(what is that around 40k?)

So I would say a RED medium format camera (of course video...done right) for about 7-8k.

This way it blows Hasselblad out of the water and Canon at the same time. Remember the key...a medium format chip...that does video. :)

Now this price is more than most of you are asking for.
But remember with the RED ONE they went after the Genesis, etc. first...now they are bringing affordable scarlet. (good quality)

So it goes to say that they would later introduce a 2-3k camera to compete in the midrange...well, to redefine the midrange line up...and yes, shoots video...that works...as well.

Just my guess - could totally be off, but it would be nice to see Red attack this from the top as well. :)

p.s.s. - and for those die hard film guys who like still images - maybe Epic will be enough.
Shoot your video/film and grab shots of high resolution. But not sure that the chip is good enough to reproduce stills like a medium format hasselblad. Either way, my view is to see the two (film/photography) tools merge.

Its about the artist having the tool work for him/her how they want, when they want...without having to carry around a lot of baggage. ;)
The artist creates, doesnt define themselves as a photographer or videographer. ;)
(Though one may do more of one style than the other.)

My Guess is that the DSMC (if Scarlet is different) will be higher than a Scarlet but lower than RedOne in price. It will be Full frame 35mm, at least 2k movie mode up to 60fps with interchangeable lens, and audio. I would love the price to be the same as Scarlet if not lower of course. :innocent:
 
Speculations about the price going at 25% of the big guys and what not, are simmilar to futuristic ideas of the sixties. Well we can all agree, that none of us is getting a room at the lunar dusty inn any time soon...

I assume it's quite easy to undercut the established "big guys" by far, when their products are all overpriced. The film crowd has the cash, no one ever bothered. Actually, the thought of low priced but high capable equipment would mean thousands of amateurs stealing jobs and so on.

BUT that doesn't work for the market the DSMC is aiming at. There is no real competition for that, not yet. Making digital movie cameras for an affordable price which can compete with the big ones, wow, the did that with the Red One. Digital stills cameras with video capabilities? That's something everyone laughs at. Except the indie film crowd of course...fumbling with 35mm converters ist no fun. My bet is: over 1000$

I hope it's below the pricerange of a HVX with 35mm converter though...
