Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I assume this should work, but I'll ask anyway:
Will it be possible to use a Mac Intel laptop to encode the RED footage to a QT and then take it to a Power PC Quad and work with it in FCS2 or Avid?
if you're encoding to quicktime, choose your codec wisely. my quad g5 will not play prores well at all and encoding is a slug too. i think it was really optimized for intel macs. but straight up h264 hd plays and encodes fine.
playback is more a function of hard drive speed. I have a g4 dual 1.42
that I edit uncompressed 10 bit footage on.
Prores is at most 22MB ps. so using a raid that is not your system drive should handle it fine.
Since Redcine or red alert wraps your files in a QT wrapper you should be fine
just using the quad mac to edit provided your graphics card and your raid system are up to the task. as long as there is no transcoding going on.
Jim has said before that intel macs are recommended, but I would see what you can do with this set up first.
exporting to a different codec or any renderig, color correction, AE or motion
are a different story, here more processing power and ram the better off you will be.
