Edit ... after testing, here's my test answers:
AES ... does 24 bit as default in the record structure, but the D/A's don't have to be 24 bit (but are in most cases).
AES ... clips in a harsh manner (other more analog processes clip with noise), so just turn on the limiter
AES ... is a smart thing to do, use it, it will make your workflow easier if your digitally editing
AES ... works easy, just connect the output of the pre-d to the 744t (you need to use the 2nd output on the pre-d)
AES ... use 48kbit, other modes are not for film
AES ... is great for stereo recording, since the pairs go on the same line.

I started playing around with the AES options, so far it just seems to work "magically" ... meaning i connect things and with a few buttons it just seems to work well. I'm feeding everything with either a sound device 744t and pre-d. I am thinking AES is a smart thing to do, seems to just work perty nice?
Is this something I can't mess up, or are there "tricks" to using aes? By default my system seems to record at 48khz (is 96 khz overkill, even for things like cello solos) ? I'm assuming the entire aes chain is 24 bit default A/D (i.e. i don't want 16 bit, and i want to make sure by default it is always 24, there doesn't appear to by any options on A/D on AES in the epic or on my sound device stuff). Anyone else playing around with aes audio ... or have any recommendations ? I figure RED supported AES because someone needs it ...
