  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PIX 240 with Red Epic Camera

Actually, the Pix can record in DNxHD220X (175X for 23.98 fps), which IS the highest quality available using Avid's codec. Neither one currently records the ProRes4444 codec, at least to my knowledge, but they both will do ProRes422HQ, which is a 220Mb, 10 bit codec and relatively equivalent to DNx220X (some might say a copy of it - not me, though.... ;-D ). If one wants uncompressed recording, there are solutions for that, too. Among those are the Convergent Designs Gemini (about $6K last time I checked) and the Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle, which is considerably less costly than any of these devices, at around $350. Even with the required SSD's running more than that (about $450 for 250GB), it's still a very economical device.

correct, I didn't notice the DNXHD specs since they are not supported yet in the AJA and my PIX240 hasn't shipped yet. DNXHD will be supported soon in the AJA via fw update. But neither device support prores 444

Internal ambient Clockit time code generator with Genlock output,

Will it be as good as the original clockit?
Had problem of sound synch on long takes shot with the Epic in 25p without any synch device.
Probably too early to have user feedback...

would u say it's pretty good as a focus monitor?

I guess "pretty good" is the qualified answer. It's not a full res panel, but it looks good. No peaking or focus assist, just the image. If you want something specifically for focus pulling this is not the unit.

Mitch,

The realtime cross conversion feature was something I have been wondering around ever since they announced the PXI240. Thanks!
So what about the metadata?

Metadata is stored in the header just like anything else. If you cros convert it might get some data confused, especially if you were doing a 3:2 pulldown removal. Someone will have to test but I would suggest asking Sound Devices directly.

The Gemini 444 should be available around mid-October. I belive $6K is correct. The HyperDeck Shuttle is available now but it should be noted that this is a 4:2:2 uncompressed recrder, not 4:4:4. Also currently available is the CineDeck, which can record 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 and do so uncompressed or in all flavors of Cineform, ProRes and DNxHD. It also has a 7" screen with scopes, exposure and focus aids, peaking and pixel zoom, plus a bunch of other features. It's around $8.5K and is the kitchen sink of these recorders.

Note, we sell & rent this stuff. So do others. ;-)

The idea is that you can use it as your master clock sync device. Remember that this is Sound Devices we're talking about.

Mitch,

The real time conversion for 720 output and the metadata preservation were separate topic, so if the R3D filename is preserved in the Prores file created in the PIX240 would be great.

Also, one of the main feature on PIX240 to me is the audio features. Sound Device quality mic preamp and audio file along with Prores video. Great stuff.

We ordered one, too. Let you know how it works with our Epic-M.

Does the PIX 240 crop the image from 5k (Epic) or does it down-convert the full image to 1080p? It says on the sound devices site that it is accepts 1080p input so I'm guessing it is cropping. Anyone know for sure?

its going to record exactly what is provided out of the SDI.
4KHD is not full raster so it will have a black border on all 4 sides
5K FF is the closest we currently have to 16:9, but will give you a slight letterbox.

there are currently no options for a full raster 16:9 recording, hopefully this will change soon.

That's strange, given that 4KHD is specifically designed to scale nicely to 1080p! I'm guessing they must just be using the same scaler as the 5K output uses, hence ending up with a smaller frame. Certainly hope they get that working soon, as an option for 1080p DTE output from the Epic would be very handy in some situations (like one I've got next week, for instance!).

Would also be great if you could get it to output with the HDR "baked in", so that you could grade from a full-range HDR image without having to go back to the RAW files, but that's probably asking too much of the processing engine. Would be cute, though!

Incidentally (and not very importantly!) I still think it should be called 4xHD, but maybe that's just me!....
