  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Phantom or Epic at 300fps

Do not trust flicker free HMIs.

They are flicker free at frame rates below 120fps, but above that I would not trust them. Even if they do not flicker you can encounter a phenomenon known as Arc Wander, which creates a shimmering effect.

Tungsten lights above 2000w, high output LEDs such as Nila, plasma lights such as Hive -- these are all safe light sources. For more information on acceptable light sources, read the Phantom FAQ in the Resources section of the AbelCine website. I wrote this information yearsago and it still holds essentially true.

Hi Mitch, thank you so much for the help. I will try out a couple of different ones then, tungsten would work well then!

Just an update, we are going with the Phantom and have readjusted to shoot 1000fps instead. Thank you Satski for introduction! We will be using flicker free HMI's but if anyone has a better lighting option please let me know! Thank you again

I would go with Joker-Bug 800 or 1600... Those are wonderful lights for high-speed shooting and the quality of those lights is second to none. Love them more than any other light on the market today.

And whatever anyone else tells you, they are flicker free so long as ... At 60hrz (USA) 24fps and 60 fps doubled (up to whatever) would have no flicker. In Europe same deal goes for 25fps @ 60hrz. (25fps & 50fps doubled to your liking) ...

Attached is a quick screenshot from Phil Holland from awhile back...

What Mitch said, it´s not a matter of the electronic design, use HMIs with care. The arc inside the bulb is not stable, it even differs from bulb to bulb of the same brand. Big tungstens are your friends.

Cheers, Ulf

The Phantom tech agreed we need to go 2000w at up, HMI may create some problems so we are going tungsten!

I agree with the others that I would avoid Epic at 300fps due to the not so high quality at 2k. I normally stay around 200fps depending on what format at 3k. Then you get a pretty sharp image.
I love the slow motion on Epic, in my mind the highest wish I have is that they keep bumping up the amount of slow motion we can do. 500fps in the next upgrade would be lovely. Maybe we can call it Red Turtle for the SLOW motion upgrade. erhm, forget it;)
